Welcome to the Land of the Padlet! Today, you will create a post about the book you read for summer reading. If you did not read a book off the Summer Reading List, write your post for any novel you think SHOULD be on the Summer Reading List. Compose a concise and insightful 5-7 sentence OPINIONATED response about your chosen book. I recommend writing your answers on a Google or Word document and transferring them here when complete. You MUST log in to Padlet to receive credit for your response. Include the following in your response: Image of your book's title, brief summary of the book's plot, what life lessons this book teaches, what you liked BEST about the book, if/why you would recommend this book to others. NOTE: Your response will receive credit if it follows correct grammar and rules (PROOFREAD!) and is unique to YOU, so the ideas you write need to be your own. Be as persuasive as possible in why this book "wins" over the others!

Into The Wild

The book Into The Wild is an amazing adventure Christopher Johnson McCandless, and how he is in college, and wants to go away. He sends his college transcript and a note to his parents, and he sets off on his adventure. The main point of the book is that nature should never be underestimated. People often just brush off the idea of weather affecting them. Always live your life to the fullest because you never know when your final moments will come. ”Please return all mail I receive to the sender. It might be a very long time before I return South. If this adventure proves fatal and you don’t ever hear from me again, I want you to know you’re a great man.I now walk into the wild.”(Into the Wild, 69) This is Chris’ last postcard written to Wayne. In my opinion, my statement about how people brush off nature, Chris kind of justifies this. He sends off his last postcard he realizes that this may be his last note. He seems a bit arrogant in his message. He knows he may die, but goes anyways. My other statement is justified as well because it’s best if you live your best life because we don’t know when we will go. “Two years he walks the earth, no phone, no pool, no pets, no cigarettes. Ultimate freedom. An extremist. An aesthetic voyager whose home is the road. Escaped from Atlanta. Thou shalt not return, ‘cause “the West is the best.” And now after two rambling years comes the final and greatest adventure, the climactic battle to kill the false being within and victoriously conclude the spiritual revolution. Ten days and nights of freight trains and hitchhiking bring him to the great white North. No longer to be poisoned by civilization he flees, and walks alone upon the land to become lost in the wild. – Alexander Supertramp, May 1992.” (Into the Wild, 163) This quote shows that he is finally free from the “poisonous” civilization. He says that this is his last adventure. I believe that he is somewhat predicting his death. I feel like he knows that this is probably it, or this is his last adventure into the wilderness. “As she studies the pictures, she breaks down from time to time, weeping as only a mother who has outlived a child can weep, betraying a sense of loss so huge and irreparable that the mind balks at taking its measure.” (Into The Wild, 132) Chris’ mom weeps that her son is gone. They didn’t believe he would die out there. This is a sad but harsh moment that all life is precious and should be valued at all times.

The author's style is very formal in a sense due to how wordy some of the passages and quotes. My quotes work as my passages because each has a separate tone just like the whole book. Sometimes it seems very joyful, and other moments it’s very harsh. I chose these quotes specifically because it supports my statement about the book, and it shows the style of the book. The mystery surrounding the choices Chris makes. The connections between real life in the book are true yet harsh. The death of someone really affects others around you. While his death may have not meant much to others his death really touched his friends. This book, and many others i have read while at DuBourg really show their own stories. Books tell me that each story is different from the next, and no matter how much research or underlying plots you will never know the true story behind someone.

Black Hawk Down

Black Hawk down is a story by Mark Bowden about the Navy SEALS and the Army Rangers attempting to take out Somali Faction leader Mohamed Farrah Aidid. There was an armored convoy on the ground and two black hawks in the air telling the ground team the path to Aidid's house. One of the Black hawks was going to drop troops by Aidid's house but the tail rotor of said Black hawk was struck by an RPG (rocket propelled grenade) and goes down about 5 blocks from his house. The convoy was severely damaged, so they went back to the base and got ready to go rescue the people on the black hawk. once they got about 4 blocks from the downed bird, Aidid's men were everywhere. The convoy never reached the bird though, and the bodies were never recovered. The book is written from the perspective of one of the Navy SEALS who was shot multiple times and still fought through the pain to attempt to save his friends. 10/10 would recommend this book to anyone above a freshman reading level.

The kid was on a plane to Canada and the pilot died while flying and the kid crash landed the plane in a lake. He had to survive by himself for months only using the stuff that he could find off the plane. He ate fish and turtle eggs and had an encounter with a bear before being rescued

Milkweed

Milkweed is a story written by Jerry Spinelli about a young, Jewish boy in Warsaw during the Holocaust during World War II. The Boy and his father struggle as times get harder and the Nazi army hunts down the Jewish people who live in Germany. Young Janusz Korczak did not know what was going on. Him and his father were moved to a Ghetto within the city. While in the Ghetto and as times got more rough and rough, Janusz met a young girl his age and he connected with her. he introduced her to his new friends that were in the Ghetto. His friends are more on the rough side of life and steal from others to get by. As time goes by our young friend grows up little by little in the environment he was forced into. Day by day he sees more men, women, and children die around him and littering the streets. As time goes by, The Germans are losing the war and are doing a last ditch effort to finish their crude and horrific work. They force all the Jewish people into lines so they can load onto a train to "a wonder place" as they put it. Janusz sneaked away to find his best friend whom he loved. As more time went by and as more people entered the train, he couldn't find his friend. At the end of this movement he stood alone at the train station, no soldiers, no Jews, just himself. What I liked most about this book is that it is a story about a young boy surviving during a tough time that was forced upon him and his people. I would most definetly recommend people to read this book. It is really deep and shows how rough it was from a first hand experience on the Holocaust that will change you. i recommend this book being put on the summer reading list due to how rich the story is.

How to Read Literature Like a Professor

How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster is a book that helps the reader to read literature as an English professor. The book touches on how every story has a quest, usually one that slays the dragon. The book also focuses on and highlights that nothing is original. Someone thought of that idea before and someone will think of that idea again. Foster mentions that everything that is mentioned in a novel is significant, especially rain which can mean the character is going through a change or a cleanse but can also be used to foreshadow something bad that is about to happen. This book also mentions the importance of symbols and why they are needed. My favorite thing about this book was how it nitpicked everything that you need to read a book in depth, which will help in college. I would recommend this book to be on everyone’s reading list due to the fact that this book will help the reader in an English college class. Thomas C. Foster did a wonderful job in writing this book and explaining how to break down a book and look at all of its components, along with witty comments and funny jokes.

When I started reading Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, the story was pretty slow to begin. But as I continued to read, it started to get more interesting. Basically, the book is about a young man by the name of Christopher McCandless. He had a pretty good life. When he was younger, he lived with his Father, Mother, and sister. His family was well off, his parents owned their own business bringing in great income. While his family seemed perfect, it really wasn't. While growing up, Chris and his sister really close, but with his parents, Chris came off to be strong forward, not listening to what they had to say. His father was hiding a great secret which made Chris look at his father in a different way. When Chris finally found out what his father was hiding, he rebelled. When Chris graduated college, his parents gave him a great sum of money and he had already bought himself his dream car. This is when Chris announced to his family and friends that he was going on a journey all alone. He would finally get away from the chaos and his family themselves. His main goal to travel to Alaska. Chris stole away in his new car with little camping supply, the money his parents had given, and a few of his belongings. Chris was so happy. Along his journey, he met many while keeping his distance at the same time. In Chris' mind, he was running away from all the hurt and pain that his family, mainly his father, had caused him over the years. In his mind, he thought that this journey would make it all better, make it all go away. But to Chris' demise, he was in some ways wrong. This book would be perfect for those who enjoy complicated stories and an insight of what direction to take in their life. I would highly recommend this book for summer reading.

This book is about a little Latina girl named Esperanza. She tells the story of her childhood in Chicago. She also describes how her family came to be in a house on Mango Street. Esperanza also talks about the move and how hard it is and, how it makes her feel. This story also talks about the house which is the main idea of this story. The house’s theme in this story is “Self –Definition” which mean the struggle to define herself underscores her every action and encounter. I think that people should read this book because it helps show people that life is hard and, that you can make through anything. Even if it seem like there is no way out of the situation.

Coates tries to raises awareness about the lack of equality in this country, such as how to deal with the police. He explores racism and violence towards African Americans. I would recommend this book because it gives life lessons and talks about surviving in America as a African American. my favorite part is how real-like the book Is.

Wonder is a book about a little boy named August or "Auggie" Pullman. Auggie was born with a facial deformity which made it very difficult for him to make friends. He has been home schooled all his life but for the first time, he is entering a mainstream elementary school. While he's on a tour of the school, he meets Jack, Julian, and Charlotte. Auggie thought that Jack was his first friend at his new school because he was very nice to him but he later overhears Jack telling Julian that he's only nice to him because the principle asked him to be. Jack told Auggie that he was sorry about what he said and told him that he really wants to be friends with him. Julian continues to bully Auggie and eventually Jack stands up for Auggie and punches Julian in the face and gets suspended. Auggie's sister Oliva or "Via" expresses how her parents put all their energy into Auggie and they arealways making sure he is okay. She said that she has learned to take care of herself. "August is the sun. Me and Mom and Dad are planets orbiting the sun." But she says that she loves Auggie very much. I think that Wonder is a very good book and it shows that everyone has insecurities and flaws and we shouldn’t hide from them or be ashamed of them. Nobody is perfect and you should never judge a book by its cover. I would recommend this book to others because it shows to it is okay to be yourself and you shouldn't change because someone else doesn't like you.
