Race and Privilege to me:

The fact of the matter is that some races get more privileges than others, see what is happening in North America, the blacks are treated like dirt as compared to the whites. Look at that racist president, Donald Trump. I guess it is better now but still.....

Everybody should be treated the same regardless of race and skin color......I agree with that statement but lets accept that that can never happen. The best that we can hope to do is level out the playing field.

We might unintentionally offend the other race just because we were simply making a joke. People say that everyone should have equal rights and privileges regardless of gender, but its really hard to actually make the change happen. Actions matter more than words. I wonder if we are actually making a conscientious effort to be sensitive to others.

For example, if you go to the void deck to enjoy yourself and you see a old man/woman of a difference race as you and that old man/ woman looks dirty. You immediately go to your defensive mode and be on your guard or you move away. I feel that yes you should be cautious but you should not immediately jump to conclusions. Besides, sometimes even when I see a dirty and wrinkly old person, I will try to move away. I think that we should try to understand what they are feeling since we will be one of them a day.

I think that the majority (in this instance in Singapore is the Chinese) does not really notice that they are criticizing or discriminating people from other races. It was only when I watched the video when it hit me that I did not notice that I kept speaking in mandarin to most of my friends (especially during my Chinese Cultural CCA) and I unknowingly speak to one of them who speaks English more often in Chinese. To many people, racial harmony is not so important. Every person, regardless of race or privilege, should be treated equally and live harmoniously together.

I mean if different skin colors didnt have different privileges, America wouldnt be how it is like today. Plus it isnt fair either as you are born with a skin color and you cant change it. Look at Singapore and compare it to singapore. Its so different.

I feal Singapore is a pretty well diversed country and we are still able to work well as a country. Thats because we dont depend on people with different skin color. Each peson has thier job and its for all. Not just for the malays or tamils but also the chinese. Therefore, i feal that race shouldnt affect our privileges

=)

1) I think Dollah and Munah might have felt sad for the rest of the children, because they might take it badly when they find out that they were adopted. They would also feel stressed because they have to keep the secret. They both would have felt strange, but in different ways. Munah treats them like her biological siblings, while Dollah must have felt different in some way, which might not be good. 2) I do not think that there was a specific reason. They clearly didn’t adopt her based on her race, so I think that they adopted her because of their love for children. 3) I think she might be closer to her Malay roots rather than her Chinese roots, because she has spent her childhood with mostly Malays, and most likely would have adopted their culture. Sallamah has not spent any time with the Chinese part of her family, (well not yet anyway) And would be unfamiliar with them even though her biological parents are Chinese.
