Mary Mackillop was born in 1842 on the 15th of January in Fitzroy, Melbourne. Mary's father Alexander Mackillop and mother Flora nee McDonald had 8 children, of which Mary was the eldest. Mary and her siblings became well educated even without formal schooling, as their parents were well educated at a young age. The family thanks to their mother Flora has always had a passion for singing and music. From a young age Mary Mackillop has always had a strong love for god and a desire to help others in need. Life was very difficult for the Mackillop family but their trust and love in God helped them stay strong as well as the help from a few of their relatives. For long periods of time the children of the Mackillop family had to spend their days with relatives because they very little money. In the 1860s for a brief period of time the family lived together thanks to Alexanders job, but. after a while the family had to split up again. At the age of 16, Mary worked as a clerk for Sands and Kenny Stationers in Melbourne, which helped to support her family. Mary wrote "When i was 16 years of age, the principal care of a very large family fell upon me, and from that time until i was 25 i felt its burden more and more." At the age of 18, Mary moved to the small and private township of Penola to became a governess to her Aunt Margaret and Uncle Alexander Cameron's children. While being a governess, she was granted income which she sent to her mother who at the time was caring for Mary's 4 youngest siblings. As well as teaching her Uncles children, in Mary's own time she helped people in poverty.

Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

The main theme is that the Samaritan walking by, stopped for the poor, robbed man who was on his way to Jericho. The Samaritan helped him tending his wounds and then placing him on his own donkey took him to a close by inn, making sure the man was cared for. The story takes place on the way from Jerusalem to Jericho as said in Luke 10: 25-27. The author may have written the story to show/ tell people today that you should help people no matter who they are as it is a sign of love and kindness to God. From what is told it sounds as if the Priest and Levite are selfish and care for their themselves more then the victim who was robbed of his clothes, where as the Samaritan was kind, loving and made sure the man was alright.

World Behind the Text

The location is set in between Jericho and Jerusalem on a road that was very common for thieves and robbers. Jerusalem is on a much higher level compared to where the man was walking so the road on which you walk along gradually slopes down. Because of this it is very easy for robbers to attack as the land is just barren countryside and people must walk through the desert terrain with small mountains and large hills to each side. People at the time didn’t have a lot of valuables and people usually only had one set of clothes. it was common for thieves so people stole other clothes. . The background to the main characters is very interesting. Priests: at the time had a different role than in modern society today. The Jewish people had strict laws about if people were clean or unclean. At the time if the priest was going to a temple he wouldn’t be allowed to touch a dead body. Levites: were priests at the time also, but the main duty of a Levite is to read and teach Jewish people the Torah. Rules such as this were not as strict for them but the Levite didn’t want to become ‘unclean’ as his job was to work in the temple. Samaritans: and Jews didn't traditionally have any love for one another, but when one side is dangerously hurt it was an exception rather than a rule to help. Some information about how it was written is that Jesus in the beginning of the parable starts the story and again at the end Jesus speak telling the man listening to do what the Samaritan had done. The author (Luke) doesn’t say what the time it is or what type of terrain it is but by the information that can be gathered it would be day and the road isn’t so populated. All this background information provides a deeper message as it tells people what life was like back in that time and how much things have changed today. Now a days you can walk in the street and feel safe were as in those days you were prone to getting attacked and left to die.

The author wrote this story to convey a meaning of love and kindness like how the good Samaritan help the man who was robbed. The main message of this story is to help others, no matter what job you have/ have to do. The target audience would be for everyone in the world as everyone needs to help each other no matter what difference they have. This parable may have inspired Mary Mackillop as she helped others from a young age and kept trust in God to look after her.

Mary Mackillop loved to write letters to her family and friends saying how she was going and asking how they are as well as including the love for God. In some letters she writes small prayers for example, "If choice be given, seek the most neglected places to which He calls us. Let us never forget that, in the spirit of our Rule, it is to those we should desire to go. ... Let us be true to the beautiful spirit of our Institute. … Let St Joseph's true children remember their mission and seek first the poorest, most neglected parts of God's vineyard." and "My name in religion is Mary of the Cross. 21.8.1867 To the Sisters she wrote in 1890, Let not your crosses make you unhappy. Look upon them as stepping stones to an eternity of happiness, and value them as the most precious present from a good and loving God."
The significance in these letters/ prayers Mary Mackillop wrote are very important as it shows how truthful and loving she was to God and how much she trusted him with her life. Due to letters such as this, we can see how Mary's writing spread God's word around the world so that people to read and learn and gain inspiration from them.

The message of the Rerum Novarum is sharing difficulties through reflections. The difficulties include; the rights of the Church to speak on social issues, private property, role of the state, as well as a workers right to have a just wage, and also the importance of worker associations. The Rerum Novarum which was about the duties and rights of capital labour had 7 principles, one of the principles being protection for the poor. Mary Mackillop at a young age realized that in the majority of circumstances the poor suffered many losses, This led to her desire to help them by opening schools and opening homes to abused women and the homeless.
