Why Feminism?

Well why not? I'm a woman therefore I believe it is critical to my existence for me to be a feminist. Now let's get a few things out of the way.
I am not a man hater.
I am not a preacher of white feminism.
I am not a SWERF or a TERF.
I am not a feminazi.
I am a feminist and those things are not.
Feminism is more than calling out the injustices we face as women and fighting the good fight.
Feminism is the movement to support and encourage women and help foster dreams and courage within others.

Roxane Gay writes this essay as a reaction to a news article she read. It was sadly not atypical in its nature. An 11 year old child is raped by 18 grown men and all the author can seem to worry about is the future of these criminals. This is a sad story that focuses on the gruesome reality and commonplaceness of victim blaming.

The focus of this essay has always been a hot topic, but even more so recently. Roxane Gay targets the government's increasing interest in the female reproductive system. Not necessarily in how it works or how to safely maintain it and keep it healthy, but how to legally regulate and restrict it. In this day and age, women must get used to the idea that a room full of men will be making the decisions on how she can and cannot use her own body.

Gay offers a helpful and lighthearted list of tips to keep your lady friendships happy and healthy. She discusses the importance of picking the right women to surround yourself with. Our friendships do not have to be catty and full of jealousy. If they are, you should evaluate why and if that friendship is worth trying to salvage.
