My inference is that Ben died in the hit-and-run, but just like the knight in the story he told, died before he could love. The spirit version of him babysat Mike, Mark, and Clem. In the end, I believe he might've asked Melanie to join him in a world other than this one, like in a world of the afterlife or something.

I think in my opinion Melanie,Ben,Mike and mark got stuck on the haunted house and there mision is trying to escape and at the end they find out Ben is dead

At the end of the story I felt chills down the spine. I really wanted to know what had happened next because there was a lot of plot twists. Also it is very creepy when we finally find out why Ben was late for babysitting. I think that Ben took Melanie to live together because similar to the story he told he probably never found love before died.
