This is perhaps one of the most difficult books I have ever read. The plot line followed two runaway’s journeys in the Mexican frontier, and a dream of a better life through escapism. I might of rated this book higher, at a ten, but I had just started reading Blood Meridian and I knew that was the true McCarthy masterpiece. The voice in this writing is possibly the most crafted voice I have ever encountered, it speaks of the truth inside the characters and the truth inside their lifestyles.

Though a little difficult and inadequate to read (as it was written in a script format), this book was a deep comparison between a broken bond between father/son, and a massive conflict between good and evil. I found the story a bit repetitive and tepid at times, therefore, I will rate it no higher than a 6, but the general moral of the book was heartwarming yet a bit complicated. It seemed that it [the moral] was that even through the dark, we can see light in each other.

This pulp fiction novel first made its big splash in Japan, where it was read by millions and later translated into the novel I read. This stomach-clenching thriller is now my favorite novel of all time, as it combines elements of gore, physiologic fear, and deep morals to write a fascinating novel so intricate it is mind blowing. Suzanne Collins definitely stole the plot of this instant classic, in order to write The Hunger Games.

This classic whimsical tale of a girl’s eccentric journey to find a skittish rabbit is very well written, yet a bit tiring at times. It is one of Lewis Carroll’s most well-known novels, and rightfully so. Yet this is not my favorite work from Lewis Carroll, Jabberwocky, a poem, is my favorite for two reasons. First, I absolutely love the way he combines rhyme and cacophony to create a dark, yet beautifully written poem, and secondly, I enjoy its abstract and biting plot.

I haven’t read a John Green novel in a while, and I felt like this one was a bit of a let down. I do not know if co-writing this novel with David Levithan had a negative impact on the plot, or if the overall story didn’t have a strong base, but it didn’t reach me as deeply as many other John Green novels, such as Looking for Alaska or The Fault in our Stars. But the novel also spanned some deep and heartfelt topics, such as figuring out that your best friend that you met online doesn’t exist.

This fast paced and eloquently written follow up to Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children definitely does not disappoint.  Philosophical concepts, whimsicality, and the urgent, choppy pace of the plot created an altogether wonderful novel. I will refrain from ranking it higher then a seven though, because I do not want to get to excited for the third novel only for it to be a let down, because I think I want to rank the entire series as a whole, not just one book at a time.

A story not to condone, but to never forget. The quintessential literary genius of Cormac McCarthy is abundant in his masterpiece, and though chilling, depraved, and violent, a moral truth of humanity can be found at the heart of this book. Only 14, the main character known only as “the Kid”, sets out to spill blood in order to heal himself.

This was a mediocre book, borrowing heavily from the young-adult and realistic-fiction stereotypes. For example, the growth of this character was simple and easily traceable. He became open-minded and learned to care about others, when, in the beginning, he was selfish and chose only to practice self-destructive habits. The plot, however, was audacious, and unrealistic for his situation. The main character went to through to many fantastical adventures for the book to stay inside of realistic-fiction boundaries.

A dry and emotionless novel about a silly and obsessive group of girls whose sole goal in life was to love and appreciate a boy band. Surprisingly, this novel became dark and twisted, and the girls found themselves in a murderous quandary, which the all could have escaped from if necessary, but none chose to. After laboring through a fruitless and tepid plot, it became clear that this book lacked Author's craft, which, should come as no surprise. The only element in this book that was of slight interest to me was an endearing moment of between one of the girls and a boy bander.

A poorly written yet surprisingly bone chilling book, Phoenix Island, was a violent survival story about a Battle Royal-like island for troubled youth,  who were bred into war machines. The plot is a page turner, but the Author’s craft is nowhere to be seen. After reading the literary masterpieces of Cormac McCarthy, I have had very high standards for writing. Another disappointment I have for this book was how unrealistic and Sci-fi this book began to resemble at the end, as if the author had run out of ideas.

I had already read this book over the summer, but I thought it was about time for a reread, because this book is one of my favorite Realistic-fiction stories. It follows the life of gay junior Simon Spier, and his relationship with a mysterious unidentified boy, who sent emails to each other under Pseudonyms. This endearing and emotional book was both melancholy and elated, with the complications of life causing grief, and the grief bringing friends together in times of great need.

Thrown back into the free world, torn from himself, he is confronted with the lingering shadows of his former life. In this novel, the nature of free will is challenged by a single “horrorshow malchik”.

This book was read, in class, for a trimester, accompanied by a literary analysis study that we conducted on the many-sided truths of TKaM. This novel, undeniably a moral masterpiece, and an instant classic, used complex literary craft, such as instituting a web of obligations, using the traits and actions that define characters as an example of social change, as well as using a Southern-Gothic theme to craft setting. The plot, which centers on an accusation of a black man raping a white woman, thus leading to a trial, is told purely through the eyes of a child.

I was mildly surprised at this graphic novel’s ability to inspire moral growth and development through the use of excerpts from famous texts such as Ulysses and The Great Gatsby. It follows the life of the author, in which the subject of growing up in a problematic family is explored in this deep and melancholy novel. Partly bildungsroman, it is a tale of coming of age, and coming to terms with yourself, intrapersonally.
