Education was recognized by Raffles as one of the first needs in his new settlement, so he opened up the first school in Singapore know as The Singapore Instituition (later renamed as Raffles Instituition). This all took place in 1823, four years after Raffles came to Singapore. The lack of a school of any standing moved the new chaplainin 1833 to apply to the government for a grant to establish a free school, and it was accepted, with a the place being given to him located near to the foot of fort canning. The school was opened on the 1 august 1834.

I can infer that education in Singapore was not as informative and that there were not many facilities for students to utilise back in the early 1820's. This source is relevant as it shows the how education was like in singapore in the 1820's. It shows the vision of Sir Stamford Raffles and what he hoped for Singapore to achieve through its meritocratic structure
