I came to Ellis Island hoping to have a better future in New York. To give my son somewhere better to grow up and support him in all his needs. Our journey to come to Ellis Island was through a ship crowded with many people. I would see families with kids, couples, and just people by themselves trying to achieve a new life. When me and my son arrived we luckily were immediately attended. We were examined and tested for any illness. I would notice my son being a little scared. I wonder what was going on through his little mind. When we were done we were good to go. I decided to stay in New York and raise my son in this city. This is my story on arriving at Ellis Island.

My name is Janet, me and my mom were at a new place I’ve never been at before. It was different and I felt scared because I don’t like going to places I don’t know. This man examined me. I asked my mom why are we were getting examined if we are good people. My mom said, Janet we’re going to a better place. Where we’ll have better opportunities and you’ll have so much fun with other kids. We’re just getting checked just in case we’re sick. I didn’t understand what my mom meant by a “new place“. We continued to stay at this place for three days. It was getting so boring. Me and my mom then left that place and traveled to New Jersey.

My Name is John. I came to Ellis Island with my two boys and my wife. We’ve been her for one week already. Our process to come to New York is slower than others. We’ve been very negative about this situation. My kids are starting to get frustrated and my wife is beginning to get worried. I keep telling them that we will go to New York we just have to be patient. We came outside to get some fresh air. Looking out at the city of New York gives us hope. One day me and my family will be there. My kids will have grandkids and me and my wife will grow old there in the the city of New York.
