BASC0005 W1: Group discussion 1: Minard’s Visualisation of Napoleon’s Campaign by Gong, Yi

What information is represented by this visualization?
What propositions are implicit in this visualization?
What form of visualization is it?
Who is the audience? What do you need to understand and find value in this?
Is this the best/most overrated visualization ever produced?
What doesn’t it show?
Does it pass the Squint Test?

Positives
- Trend lines are a good representation of the soldiers that passed away (helps visualize it without )
- Very good at telling a narrative (e.g., the narrative of soldiers that died at low temps while crossing a river.
-Uses scale effectively

Negatives
- Detail can be overwhelming (a lot of small text, lines and details can be a lot to interpret at first glance for a reader)

Other visualisation Interpretation:
- It is simpler to understand as information is minimised (no lines, specific details)
- However, it is less in depth and thus does not represent the narrative as effectively.

The chronological and antichronological information of the graph was also confusing when they were put on the same graph. The information about the temperature, though useful, was confusing as well as the axis were small.
