-Altered book
-Paper mache??
-Something with cardboard
-Newspaper drawings/layering?
-After looking around on the Internet, I decided to do an altered book. I was partially inspired by a book with a beehive cut into it and the many books with forests in them, but I knew I didn't want to do a forest since it was a common theme
-Understand the art world: I looked at some examples of what other people had done with books. I found one piece in particular that inspired me, a book with honeycombs cut out into it. I intend to make the bees bigger and make more of them, however, and want them to interact with the honeycombs more than the example I found (picture below)

I haven't faced any challenges just yet, but I may come across them when I start cutting out the honeycombs.

-Started cutting out the honeycombs in the book
-It's hard to keep the shapes consistent, so I may have to go back through and adjust them accordingly after I cut everything out
-Stretch and explore: I have never used an Exacto knife to cut into paper or in an art project before. This is a new experience for me, and so far I am having success.
-Develop craft: I can use the Exacto knife safely by making sure I don't nick myself or anyone else with the blade. I need to make sure the blade part of the knife is securely attached and doesn't fall off. I will need to clean up the shavings and honeycomb shapes that I cut out after I finish.
-Engage and persist: I am motivated by what I imagine the end result of the piece will be. I also want to finish it so I can at least say I have had some experience and have stepped out of my comfort zone on one of my projects. It is something that doesn't happen very often, but I know that it is necessary if I want to grow as an artist.

-Continued cutting out the honeycombs
-Observe: The little strips between the honeycombs keep tearing, so I have to find some way to either counteract that or just glue the pages together so you don't notice.
~Reflect: Mrs. Marsh suggested either mod-podging the back of the pages or gluing them together. Maybe I can use these somehow?
-Engage and persist: I am having problems keeping the honeycombs consistent in shape and size. They keep ending up different almost every time. It may be able to be fixed if I keep cutting the honeycombs to fix them, but that may get tiring. I may just keep them all different so it gives the piece a more unique look.

-Almost finished cutting the honeycombs of the top right page
-Reflect: The cutting process is trickier that I thought it would be. I didn't think that the pages would tear as much as they have been. To counter that, I have been making sure to make very small cuts with the knife and make sure not to drag it over too far. This causes a place that is more likely to tear. I can also make sure to hold the pages more securely when removing the cut-out honeycombs from the book.

The bees look very good, and the honeycombs actually look similar to real honeycombs. This will be further improved when I start cutting deeper into the book.
-Stretch and explore: The fact that the honeycombs are somewhat inconsistent in shape makes the piece more interesting. It draws more attention to the bees, and it will create movement throughout the piece.

I've been learning from my prior experiences with the pages ripping, so I have been cutting in a way that causes minimal, if any, tearing in the book. You can see that there are less tears on the left page than the right one.
