He began his career on patrol with the New York Police Department's (NYPD) 102nd Precinct in Richmond Hill and later worked with the 71st Precinct, 13th Precinct, and 75th Precinct, among others. John Mastronardi was NYPD Sergeant of the Year in 2006.

After working his way up to lieutenant and platoon commander of the 83rd Precinct, John Mastronardi was promoted to captain and executive officer of the 90th Precinct in 2013. More recently, he has served in executive capacities such as a commanding officer of the 104th Precinct and special projects coordinator for Patrol Borough Queens North. He has served as citywide operations commander for the Patrol Services Bureau since May 2022.

Mr. Mastronardi has experience leading precincts composed of hundreds of uniformed and civilian personnel. In his current role, he analyzes crime trends and patterns to implement detailed responses for all precinct personnel.
