After the catastrophic Civil War which had cost both the North and the South, both money and casualties came subsequently came the phase of reconstruction. Reconstruction was viewed as either good or bad. Some of the people believed that reconstruction was good because it brought the 13th amendment which had secured the African Americans freedom, 14th amendment had given equal protection under the law, and 15th amendment had provided the African Americans the right to vote. But at the same time people viewed reconstruction as a bad thing.

The “Gilded age” was a period in U.S. history where very quick economic growth generated big riches for some but also corporate abuses and political break down. The word “gilded” means to cover with a little layer of gold so that the object would appear beautiful. During the Gilded Age, there were tons of immigrants coming from Europe and Asia. American’s were also trying to find rural farm areas, so there were many employees. To our country, we made progress from the Gilded age, but some people were becoming wealthy and some people were not, so that made a lot of people angry. We built railroads, such as the Transcontinental railroad.

The Wounded Knee Massacre was the marking of the end of organized American Indian resistance to the white culture that had arose in the New World centuries earlier. The Wounded Knee massacre was when the American Indians had divided into two factions, friendlies and hostilities. The hostile ghost dances, probably around 500 to 600 people, had came together in the northwest corner in the pine ridge reservation. Surrounded by 500 soldiers and four field pieces, the Sioux, numbering about 100 men and perhaps 200 women and children, were ready to be escorted to the railhead to be transferred to Omaha. But when Forsyth demanded all guns to be surrendered, the Sioux became angry and refused to comply. This resulted in a battle which had 190 Sioux soldiers either wounded or dead, while the army had about 65 dead or wounded.

The Great Depression was in 1929 and lasted for about a decade and was the worst economic downturn in US history. In the years leading up to Black Tuesday, the United States was in great excitement. World War I was a event of the past, and the automobile, film, and radio industries boomed as people had more money to spend than ever. When the party came to an abrupt end with the stock market crash it came as a surprise to many. Many people went to their bank to withdraw their money due to the stocks dropping. The banks did not have enough money to give everyone their money back so a lot of people went broke.

Women’s rights have been neglected in the past so in 1848 some women tried to get equal rights for everyone. The women had been angry because just as Reconstruction had given the right of freed slaves to vote, women’s rights had been pushed to the side. This made them angry because there were slaves that got the right to vote before them. So they started the Women’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls New York. Which they got what they wanted and the 19th amendment got passed giving women the right to vote.
