My parents didn’t really talk about it, unless I brought it up, but that wasn’t really until around high school. They expressed to me that everyone was created equally, but never really made it about race. They didn’t have many friends of other races. I don’t think they were closed off at the idea of it, but we just did not grow up in a diverse area. They treated everyone with respect and expected my sisters and i to do the same. I am under the impression that they think hard work can be the solution for everyone and they fail to recognize that not everyone is as privileged as they are.

I have a Filipino brother that I remember coming home and asking me and my mom why he looks different than the other kids.
