I can say that I am not fully confident or comfortable in addressing microaggressions. I feel that some I may be able to respond to more comfortably than others. I also feel that sometimes I may not realize what somebody saying is a microaggression, thus missing the opportunity to address it in a more correct way.

I also think that the hardest part is being politically correct like Morgan said. I would not want to try and address something and be disrespectful or inaccurate on accident. Of course, I never want to be mean to somebody on purpose, especially a child. I think the hardest part too is trying to explain a microaggression to a child without sounding mean. For example, to an adult you could say “you're being racist right now”, but to a child you have to figure out a proper way to rephrase that that still gets the message across but as not as harsh.

I work in an elementary school, so many of the microaggressions that occur are not as severe or intentional as others. The other day during lunch one of the kindergarten students was talking about another student’s food (one that is a staple in a certain culture). I know they were just curious about it, but it came across as mean by them saying that it smelled funny. The way I tried to fix this is by asking the child if they would be happy if someone said that about their food, and then I just talked to them about how food is good for everyone the most important part is that it helps fuel your body and your brain. I said if they had questions im sure they can ask about it, but they have to make sure they are asking in a kind way.

I recognize the importance of addressing them, but this is an area I'd definitely like to get more guidance on. I think coming from whatever position you do, you are naturally less sensitive to certain issues which don't directly apply to you, so I'd like assistance in addressing them as effectively as possible.

I think we all definitely fear retribution from concerned parents, so I think creating a constructive and productive discussion space while also not alienating any students is really important, but probably, toeing this line is the most difficult aspect.

I think it might be as simple as pausing and pivoting to explore the real gravity of what was said or done. Asking the aggressor to articulate and consider the concrete implication of their actions and the impression they make on peers can be effective and a meaningful moment for all parties involved. I might literally stop and be like "hey, [student] do you understand what it is you just said? Can you tell me what that means to them vs what you meant by it?"
