In 1795 the English invaded the Cape Colony and took charge from the Boers. In 1836, thousands of Boers packed everything they owned into ox wagons places to live in the north. This big adventure is known as the Great Trek. The biggest problem of the Great Trek was that the new places the Boers wanted to settle were not empty of people; they belonged to African tribes like the Basotho, the Ndebele, the Swazi and the Zulu

Many years before the Europeans and the black Africans came to South Africa, there were two kinds off people, the Khoi and the Sand. The Khoi were cattle herders and the Sand were hunter-gatheres. They kept away from each other. The San painted stories about themselves on cave walls.
Many pictures show how important it was to dance. Dancing made The Khoi or a San tribe feel like a family. Today, only a few of the San have survived. They live in the Kalahari Desert. All the Khoi have died.

In 1487 was the first time the Portuguese saw the land. The Explore ship was called Bartholomew Diaz. Only 12 years later Vasco da Gama did the same, but they didn´t stay.
First in 1652 the first Dutch settlers arrived. They were looking for a place to rest and get supplies for the long journey to Asia.
The Holland government sent the commander Jan van Riebeek to build a supply station in Table Bay at the foot of Table Mountain.
Year by year the station grew into a Colony. The Farmers liked to call themselves Boers.
The original people were lucky if they were taking as slave but if they were unlucky the would be killed. There were even rewards for killing black people and The Khoi and the san.
In 1795 the English took over the colony. The Dutch was really angry also because they made new laws, and in 1833 they decided to abolish slavery.
The Dutch Boers didn't like what the English did and didn't want to be ruled by them. In 1836 most of the Boers left the coast and started building their own republics north of the cape colony.
The Cape colony continued to grow after the Boers had left, thousands of farmers was invited from England to come.
With all the wars England fought against the Xhosa tribes in the east, continued the English and Boer colonies to take rest of the land in South Africa.
