Something that stood out to me when Josef was developing was that Josef always wanted to be an adult or man. Even when it came down to the very end when his mother had to make the decision of whether Josef or Ruthie lived and she couldn't decide about who would live he decide for his mother. He chose for Ruthie to live. This showed me that his character was developing on a whole different and stronger level, even though it was the same trait.

Mahmouds story stuck out to because he has a story thats more relevant to the problems in the middle east giving a good insight into what a kid going through that situation would be like. Part of Mahmoud's story that stuck out to me was when he thought of more than himself by giving up his sister Hana to save her life. This stuck out to me because in that moment he was floating hopelessly in the Mediterranean with Hana his bay sister and his mother and instead of thinking how he would survive he thought of his helpless bay sister first and how he would save her, which really hit me as strong character development.

All of the characters stood out to me but Josef stood a little bit taller in the crowd than the others. From the beginning of the book he wanted to be a man, be grown up, like all of us do until we hit a time and we want to be a kid again. His first experience of wanting to be more grown up is when his house was broken into and he wanted to be grown up so he could protect his dad and save him from leaving but he also wanted to be a little kid so he didn't have to leave his family. When he finally got his dad back his dad was different and it wasn't a good different. Josef the got on a boat headed to Cuba and his dad got worse to the point where he tried to commit suicide by jumping over board on the boat. Josef had to make one of the hardest and most heart breaking decisions in his life, to either send his sister to her death or sign his death certificate and go to the concentration camps.

Josef had a difficult decision when the Nazi officer said that only one of Mrs. Landu's children could go free. Josef did the right thing in letting Ruthie live, because she was younger and had more life to live. If I was Josef I don't know if I could do the same thing. Most people would say, " I would do the right thing" but if that moment ever came, chances are you wouldn't do the same thing, the heroic thing.
