POLICY: ASSESSMENT

Status: Approved
Approved by: National Development Agency (NDA)
Date of approval: 23 October 2016

CONTENT
VISION, MISSION AND PURPOSE
TYPES OF ASSESSMENT
    Formative Assessment
    Summative Assessment
    Continues assessment
PASS MARKS
ASSESSMENT METHODS
ASSESSMENT AND LANGUAGE
EXTRA CLASSES

VISION, MISSION AND PURPOSE
The vision of Bouwer Secondary School is to ensure that learners acquire knowledge, skills and values, not just to have the knowledge but to be able to apply the skills and knowledge in real life and find value in each skill. The main goal is to help learners to become critical thinkers so that they may prosper in terms of contributing towards the society to make it a better place. We do not need citizens that will reproduce but citizen that will become agents of change. In order for the society to grow and develop, our citizens need to grow and develop which is why our aim is to help grow and develop learners.

TYPES OF ASSESSMENT
Formative assessment
This takes place during the process of learning. It provides feedback both to the learner and the teacher about the progress of the learner as well as the effectiveness in teaching of the educator. This form of assessment helps the teacher to identify and improve on the strengths and weaknesses of the learner. It also identifies the readiness of a learner to do summative assessment.

Summative and Continuous Assessment
Summative assessment determines the level of competence in relation to the learning outcomes. In other words, how well has the learning outcome/objective been achieved? For continuous assessment, in every module, learners are required to write a test which could include a worksheet or informal class tests. This will take place after each unit.

Pass Marks
A minimum of 45% for each subject is needed to pass a module. A learner is required to pass with at least 80% to pass with a distinction. In order for learners to pass they have to score an average level of at least 40%. For a learner to repeat a grade/level, he/she must have failed one language. In addition, the learner must have failed one compulsory subject (Mathematics, Afrikaans, English and Life orientation) and another subject.

Assessment Methods and Assessment and Language
Observation, projects, assignments, case studies, essays, role-play, oral presentations as well as experiments will be used to assess learners. The medium of instruction is English, hence all subjects will be presented/conducted in English. The first additional language is Afrikaans, hence the learner should have some basis in terms of communicating in Afrikaans.

Extra Classes
All learners are required to attend extra classes provided by the teacher. It is compulsory classes, therefore when the learner is not able to attend there must at least be a valid reason. The same applies for when the learner is absent during an assessment task. Learner has to bring along a note with a valid reason. This note ought to be signed by the care-giver and submitted to the principal as well as to the respective teacher.
