There are no ways to "fix" Down syndrome so to speak but there are multiple treatment options giving by a speech, occupational , or physical therapist. There are also different treatments and concerns for different ages, for children they should have treatment for fine motor skills, gross motor skills, sensory problems, activities of daily living (ADL's), feeding, and speech. Therapy for teenagers will focus on continuing to strengthen fine motor skills and gross motor skills as well as language and social interaction. They will also begin to explore options for work after school/graduation.

Purpose: In this study we will be observing characteristics of speech motor skills of children with Down syndrome. These skills have been seen as either Childhood Dysarthria or more commonly as Childhood Apraxia of Speech. This studies objective was to investigate motor speech deficits in a systematic manner, keeping in mind features of both Childhood Dysarthria and Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

Method: Motor speech assessments were tested on seven 11-year old children with Down Syndrome in contrast with younger, typically-developing children using a Language-Neutral Assessment of Motor Speech for young children. Furthermore, the motor speech and non-speech oral motor skills of all participants were analyzed qualitatively using an investigator checklist of characteristics of CAS, CD and Motor Speech Disorder–Not Otherwise Specified.

Result: The results of this study showed that the children with Down Syndrome showed signs of Childhood Apraxia of Speech, Childhood Dysarthria and Motor Speech Disorder-Not Other Specified, with inconsistency throughout the group and corresponding symptoms of the disorder types. This finding is different from preceding expectations that children with Down Syndrome have either Childhood Dysarthria or Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

Conclusion: The motor speech disorders associated with Down Syndrome is very complex. The data provided some primary descriptions of motor speech disorders and some tools that clinicians can now use when assessing motor speech skills of young children with Down Syndrome.
