Paper 1 Mini Mock: The Whispers

Question 1 - 4 Marks
Use lines 1-5.
List four things you learn about the Whispers.

1. A boy heard the whispers
2. The boy heard them late in the day as the lazy sun dipped below the treetops and the woods.
3. The voices came to him gently he thought it might be the wind, or the first trickle of summer rain.
4. But as time passed, the voices grew louder and the boy was sure they were calling his name.

Question 2 - 8 Marks
Use lines 6-10
How does the writer use language to describe the setting?

The writer uses a noun "Whispers" as this suggests that the boy is hearing softly spoken words in his cranium, therefore this infers that the child could be suffering from schizophrenia as this is a mental health condition where you may hear or believe things that are not actual.

The writer uses personification " The Whispers led the boy .......... like a crunchy brown carpet as this suggests that the rotted old tree stump was sat upright within the centre of the forest floor like a statue. Moreover this highlights that the decayed branches of the tree where isolated within the forest like a desert island.
The writer also uses an adjective "Crunchy" to describe the sound of the fallen leaves as they are being trodden on as this suggests that the carpet was very treacherous and dangerous to walk over as this infers that the flooring is unsafe.

1)
.they were only heard late in day
.they were heard from the woods behind the house
.they were calling his name
.and they went from gently voice to a louder voice

2) the writer uses an adjective phrase to show how old the woods were," where a rotted old tree stump sat in the centre". this tells us that this forest has been here for a very long period and has gone through many ages this makes. But it strikes the reader as to making them uncomfortable as to a it being old meaning not many people might know about the place and anything can happen without anyone knowing like a kidnapping or murder.

The writer then strengthens the point of fear and uncomfortability by using imagery "filling every darkened shadow of the forest". this creates a frightful image in the readers head about what can be hiding in the shadow and whether they were the voices the boy hear and they were planning a horrible fate to the boy. like a pack of hungry wolves playing with its prey before the kill.

3)the writer zooms in on the boy and the whispers from lines 1-20 saying thing about how the boy thought of the whispers and what he knew whereas the whispers knew everything. "The whispers knew everything" but the boy so " badly wanted to see them, to know what kind of creatures they were...or something else entirely". As a reader this makes the person concerned for the boy since the whipers knew all about him yet he didn't know them this makes us think whether the boy is safe and makes the reader curious of what happens to the boy and whether the whispers are good or not.

1.A boy heard the Whispers
He heard them late in the day
The voices came to him so gently
he followed them
2.The writer uses a noun phrase to describe to setting. The quote"rotted, old tree" shows that this is a shabby place and very out of date, because the tree is rotted and deacayed, so it is dangerous place to go and you could get hurt or kidnapped. The word old shows the place is worn out place and very antique place and could be easy to abduct someone. This would effect the reader because the reader would feel helpless because they would want to help the boy.

Another way the writer uses language to describe the setting is adjectives. This describes the scne , one of the examples is crunchy, brown. The writer describes the caretof leaves, stumpes fallen next to the tree. This shows the writer wanst to describe to make the reader infer how dangerous(shown by quote darkened shadow) the forest is.

I didnt get time to type in Q3 i did it in my book
