The United Kingdom remains as a global economic power with the third largest economy in Europe (after Germany and France). The country serves as a global financial center and lead trading power. Most Britain's enjoy a good standard of living although there is a gap between the middle and working classes. Unemployment is lower than in many of the U.K’s neighbors even though the prices are slightly higher than usual.

The UK does most of its trading within the European Union. Natural resources include oil, natural gas, iron ore, and salt. Crude oil manufactured goods, and consumer items make up big exports. The service sector is now more dominant than manufacturing, and London is one of the world's most important financial centers. Agriculture employs less than 2 percent of the labor force but provides much of the UK's food needs because it is highly efficient. When major British banks were hurt by the 2008 global financial crisis, the government responded with a $64 billion rescue package among other measures. The government is implementing a series of decisions to lower the country's budget. Public debt is an increasing problem.

They include New years (January 1st), Good Friday and Easter Monday, May Day (May 1st), Spring and Summer bank holidays, Christmas (December 25th), and Boxing Day. Christmas is one of the most important holidays in the U.K. Houses are decorated, there are christmas trees, and mistletoes. The whole country virtually shuts down from Christmas Eve until January 2nd. People send out greetings cards and exchange gifts. Boxing Day is named for the tradition of giving small boxed gifts to servants and tradesmen. Held on 26 December it is now a day for visiting friends and family.

A holiday that Christians celebrate is Hogmanay. I looked up what this day was about and It is basically just New Year’s Day but longer. This holiday lasts from December 31st to January 2nd. Christians have a strong belief in the afterlife and much of their lives are directed at achieving eternal peace in Heaven. They believe that Jesus was the son of God and came to earth to teach through his actions and lessons.

The Church of England, or Anglican Church, is the official church in England. The British monarch must belong to it and is its worldly head. All other English people may worship as they choose. The spiritual head of the Church of England is the archbishop of Canterbury who is known as the primate of all England. The archbishops of Canterbury and York and 24 bishops have seats in the House of Lords. This gives the Church of England an official link with the British government. About 20 percent of England's people identify themselves as belonging to the Church of England.

Many people in England belong to other Protestant churches which are called Free Churches. The largest Free Churches include the Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, and United Reformed churches. About 9 percent of England's population is Roman Catholic. The Catholic Church is headed by the archbishop of Westminster. About 5 percent of England's population is Muslim. Most Muslims live in London and other large cities. England also has large Hindu, Jewish, and Sikh populations.

Throughout the United Kingdom, pastries or meat pies are popular. These combine ground meat, vegetables, and potatoes inside a pastry crust. Other favorite meals are fish and chips. Both fish and chips and curry (a dish introduced by immigrants from India) are popular take-out foods. At around 4 P.M people in the UK traditionally took a break for tea. Traditional high tea included formal preparation of tea, accompanied by an array of finger foods such as cucumber sandwiches, cheese and chutney (a type of pickle relish) sandwiches, scones, and small, delicate teacakes. To spread on the scones, clotted cream, marmalade, or strawberry jam might be served.

A large portion of British tax revenues go toward education. Education is free and compulsory beginning at age 5 and continuing until age 18. A grade level is called a former and more commonly a year. Most children attend at least two different types of schools: a primary school (from ages 4 or 5 to 12) and a secondary school (starting at age 12). As an alternative to primary school, many children attend an infants’ school (ages 4 to 7) and then a junior school (7 to 11 or 12). Public schools are called state schools, and private schools may be called independent schools or public schools. At age 16, students take an exam to earn the General Certificate of Secondary Education. In Northern Ireland, performance on a difficult government-sponsored exam at age 11 largely determines whether students will begin preparing for university or for a profession or trade. Scotland has a single set of national exams (called Highers) at the end of secondary education that play a role in university entrance.

In the performing arts, the UK is widely recognized for its theater. London boasts some of the world's premier theaters, art galleries, and concert halls. Every summer the British enjoy BBC Proms. BBC Proms are a series of classical music performances held at the Royal Albert Hall. On the last night of Proms, flags are flown and patriotic songs are sung. The event is televised, and a parallel open-air concert takes place in Hyde Park. British music has crossed a lot of time periods, styles, and genres, with work by artists like Henry Purcell, Sir Edward Elgar, Benjamin Britten, and Brian Eno. Since the Beatles in the 1960s, British rock music has gotten a worldwide influence, with bands like Queen, Oasis, and Coldplay. Folk music is popular and is played with instruments like these (drums, pipes, violins, and accordions). Scottish dances like the Eightsome Reel, the Gay Gordons, and Strip the Willow are also important.

England has a history of making amazing artists. It has been the birthplace of many known architects, artists, and composers. But its greatest artists have probably been writers like Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare, and many other English authors.

Architects have developed a lot of different styles over time. The Norman style began after the Norman Conquest. Buildings designed in the Norman style have heavy columns and semi-circle arches. The Tudor style was popular for house designs in the 1500’s in the midst of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Tudor was the family name of the queen. Characteristics of the Tudor style had flat arches, a lot of windows, gables, and chimneys, and frames filled in with brick, and plaster. During the 1600's, two of England's greatest architects were Inigo Jones and Sir Christopher Wren. Jones designed the Queen's House in Greenwich and remodeled St. Paul's Cathedral in London. Wren rebuilt St. Paul's and many other churches after they were destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666. Georgian architecture, which began during the 1700's, uses much brick and stone and has a simple design. For centuries English painters followed the styles of other European artists. But during the 1700's painters like Thomas Gainsborough, William Hogarth, and Sir Joshua Reynolds began to make their own styles. During the 1800's John Constable and Joseph Turner produced beautiful landscapes. Important English painters of the 1900's included Duncan Grant, David Hockney, Paul Nash, Ben Nicholson, John Piper, and Graham Sutherland.
