After the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the U.S. felt pressured to catch up in science and technology. This led to the National Defense Education Act, which pushed schools to focus on math and science for national security reasons. This was when education became more about competition and less about democracy. The focus shifted from producing thoughtful, engaged citizens to producing skilled workers and scientists.

This report warned that U.S. schools were failing and that the country was falling behind globally. It blamed poor student performance and called for a push towards STEM and vocational training. Afterward, funding for liberal arts and humanities declined. This report further weakened education’s role in creating democratic participation, as less attention was given to subjects that encourage critical thinking and civic engagement like the humanities.

Is what the humanities were called because they were preparing citizens to govern themselves. Subjects like history, philosophy, and literature taught critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and the ability to engage in public debates which are all important for democracy. Without liberal arts, students miss out on learning how to think deeply about societal issues and their roles as citizens. This weakens democracy because fewer people are equipped to participate meaningfully in civic life.

Without civic education, these students are less prepared to advocate for better policies or participate fully in democracy. This creates inequality, as only a select few are equipped to influence politics and policies. It limits opportunities for most people to engage in society.
