In this song, Travis Scott is the speaker as well as the subject. He created this song, along with the rest of his album, in response to articles written about him. These articles described him as a "curator", someone in the music world who is only good for features. Therefore saying he isn't a good enough artist to do work on his own, or he always needs the help of others to make himself look good. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/travis-scott-sicko-mode-song-708140/
His audience are those who criticize him, because he is showing them what he can do with his talents. He took the insult of "curator" and shoved it in their faces. The purpose is to prove to people just how advanced his skills as an artist really are. Because of this, it feels like his pride is the voice of the story. Telling those who doubt that he really is one of the best at what he does. The tone of SICKOMODE is dark and mystical, while also having the attitude of being annoyed with everyone who expects him to fail.

Travis Scott uses the lyrics and video of "SICKOMODE," intertwining the use of ethos, pathos and logos, to get his point across to his audience: That he is a legitimate artist, and that he should be taken seriously. He also proves this simply by the making of the song. His methods are very effective, and they are a big part of why his album was so successful.

Lyrical Ethos

In the lyrics, Scott uses ethos to appeal to his audience. In the first part, Drake is saying, "That's just all he know, he don't know nothin' else," followed by "I tried to show 'em." This implies that he knows better than the person he is trying to show the way to. He is saying that whoever is doing what he is doing is only doing so because that is what he was taught to do. That he doesn't know any other way to live, but that he tried to show him the right way. In the next part, Travis enters saying, "Woo, made this here with all the ice on in the booth." The term "ice" in popular culture today is used to refer to big, shiny jewelry. When someone wears a lot of "ice," they are often associated with success, power, and fame. Later in the second part, Travis goes on to say, "All of these hoes I made off records I produced." Normally, the term "hoe" refers to a woman who is sexually unfaithful to her partner. However, on some occasions it can be used to describe a person that someone doesn't like, for whatever reason that may be. Usually, the reason would be because the person did something against the other that he didn't like. Scott uses it to refer to the people who judge him, as well as the people who don't believe in him. He is saying they only exist because of what he has done in the past, and that if he wasn't successful, they wouldn't want to bring him down.

Not only does Travis Scott use ethos, but he also uses pathos to appeal to his audience. Around the middle of the second part, Scott says, "Yeah, this shit way too formal, y'all know I don't follow suit." He is describing life, and how everyone tries to be high and mighty when around others. He believes everyone has a sense to do things in life a certain way, and if someone doesn't things that way, he is wrong. However, Scott doesn't care. He is appealing to our sense of rebelliousness and uniqueness, saying that he is going to do what he wants, not what the world expects. Later, he uses Big Hawk to say, "Don't play us for weak." This appeals to our sense of pride, and tells how people try to put themselves above others, believing they're better. But here he is saying that they're not weak, so the audience - doubters, non-supporters, haters -

Lyrical Logos

Along with using ethos and pathos, Travis Scott also uses logos in his lyrics to appeal to the audience. In the very first two lines, Drake enters saying, "Sun is down, freezin' cold. That's how we already know winter's here." He is using the fact that when it gets cold, we know it is getting closer or that it is time for winter. He uses this as a metaphor for society. When he says, "Sun is down, freezing cold," he is implying that society is dark and cold-hearted. He says this because we don't support each other like we should; we always try to be better than the other instead of help one another.

Monuments are built for people who accomplish special things in their life. This makes us listen to him more, because we are drawn to leaders.

In the video, Travis Scott uses scenes of people all around him, changing quickly, while he is not changing as fast. They're all around him, moving around, yet he is unaffected. This appeals to our sense of individualism, and not going along with what everyone else is doing. He also uses some logos, on one of Drake's parts. It shows pieces of Drake being taken away, but he isn't affected. He just keeps doing what he is doing. This is a good reason to believe in him, because you wouldn't want to put your faith in someone who will fold easily under pressure.

Throughout his lyrics and video, Travis Scott shows his audience - those who try to bring him down - that he will not listen to them. He takes their words that they used, intended as criticism, and he showed them that he is so much more. Although he did use ethos, pathos and logos appeal to show this, the making of the song and album alone are what he is really targeting at his audience. After it all, Scott is successful and effective in showing his audience what he can really do, and that he will continue to do so, no matter what they say.
