"I am a doctor, not a veterinary" (Steinbeck 11). This is a metaphor because the doctor is implying that he will not see or treat Coyotito because is an animal. He is dehumanizing him by comparing him to an animal.

“Behind him Juana’s fire leaped into flame and threw spears of light.” (Steinbeck 2) This is an example of personification due to the fact that while Juana is creating this fire the flames are considered as alive which is shown through the words of 'threw spears of light'

Juana’s character is deeply developed in Chapter One. The author describes her as a really strong woman, that she “could stand fatigue and hunger almost better than Kino himself” and “in the canoe, she was like a strong man”(Steinbeck 7). Her eyes are also compared to those of a lioness, and shows that she is protective of Coyotito like a lioness is protective of her cub.

Comparing Kino to God in his situation

Kino is the main character of the story, and the author describes a situation of Kino watching an ant escaping a sand trap it had fallen into at the hands of an ant lion. The text states: "Kino watched with the detachment of God while a dusty ant frantically tried to escape the sand trap an ant lion had done to him" (Steinbeck 3). Kino, in a metaphorical sense, has God's power over this ant's life and can save or k!ll it if he so chooses to.

“The dawn came quickly now, a wash, a glow, a lightness, and then the explosion of fire as the sun arose out of the Gulf.” (Steinbeck 3) This is a hyperbole because the wording specifically makes the sun rise a big moment by describing every second the sun grows higher in the sky.

Allusion

"This was the bed that had raised the King of Spain to be a great power in Europe in past years, had helped pay for his wars, and had decorated the churches for his soul's sake."(Steinbeck 16) This is an example of Allusion because the author is mentioning a figure of the past that has a certain significance to the stories plot even though the fact drifts away slightly from the main family. The significance of the reference of the King of Spain is to show an effect of the concept of Pearls as a main plot element. Pearls seem to be the currency and a major part of everyday life for each family, the King of Spain got to where he was because of the specific bed of pearls that Kino is visiting, pearls are an element that make a difference in these peoples lives.

Once they found out there was one, not only did they celebrate, but that pearl was the biggest one they have ever seen. "It captured the light and refined it and gave it back in silver incandescence. It was as large as a sea-gull's egg. It was the greatest pearl in the world" (Steinbeck 19.

“The great pearl, perfect as the moon.” (Steinbeck 18) This example is a simile and refers to the pearl because it is discussing the appearance of the pearl which is shiny and compares it between the moon’s rays of light in the night sky.
