Syme

Syme is a very clear example of a character that has chosen to participate in oppression. Winston states that Syme is venomously orthodox, and his job is to change the language to make any thoughts of rebellion impossible. The nature of Syme's occupation is removing the number of possible concepts or thoughts that people can come up with in their minds, which is an example of oppression because it is taking away the human right of not only freedom of speech, but also freedom of thought.

There could be multiple reasons as to why Syme has decided to participate in oppression. However, a potential reason that was directly stated by Syme in the text was that he finds beauty in reducing and eliminating redundancies by removing the number of words that exist in the language, so that there is only one word to represent each concept. For example, Syme stated that the whole notion of good and bad would be covered by only six words, with all of them stemming from one word.

As there would be only one possible way to say or write a certain idea, and the party controls what this way is, rebellion would become impossible. Syme states that people would be unable to fight for freedom in the future as the whole concept of freedom would no longer exist. Therefore, people would remain oppressed forever.

If Syme has decided to participate in oppression for this reason, then it shows that some people participate in it because they see it as beautiful or a source of power, as they recognize that they are personally making a difference or making an impact on how society will live.

Although Syme states that he finds beauty in his work, it is possible that Syme is extremely orthodox because he fears the party and the punishment that could arise from unorthodox behaviors.

As those in power have the ability to perform whatever action they want in a society that lives under oppression, it is clear that one reason why people may participate in oppression is the fear of punishment, to give off the impression that they are good citizens who are dedicated and loyal to those in power.

In the case of 1984, the fear of being punished is especially apparent, as the existence of the telescreens, thoughtpolice, and other forms of surveillance make it very clear that the party is very concerned about the possibility of rebellion being conducted by the party members. Those living in the society of 1984 are very aware of vaporization and the willingness of the party to remove or murder anyone from society, so people must be very careful in a world without freedom of speech.

Winston goes against the oppression in part 1 by, this is seen when:
- he buys a paperweight
-starts writing in a diary
- visits a prostitute
- in his thoughts, what he thinks of the party

why does he do this:
- because he cannot stand that the party controls (tries to) every aspect of his life. e.g. the part controls where Winston works and what he does in his free time as well as his relationships. He hates the Party for the apathy created in him, for the disappearance of his family, and for the recreation of truth.

Why do other people still choose to participate in it?
the overall purpose of the slogans, “War is Peace,” “Ignorance is Strength,” and “Freedom is Slavery,” in the novel 1984, is to enable the reader to understand the nature of the control Ingsoc has over the people in Oceania. In the society George Orwell created in Nineteen Eighty-Four, the methods of brainwashing used by the Party are so powerful that positives can be viewed as negatives and negatives as positives.
-This reflects a major goal of the Party, namely to get the people to rely on their ability to use doublethink to follow the dictates of Ingsoc leadership faithfully
- " Winston was dreaming of his mother. He must, he thought, have been ten or eleven years old when his mother disappeared."

Parsons is another example of a participant in the party. He truly believes in the goals of the party and does not dare to question any of their choices. This is shown when his daughter denounced him to the party for saying "Down with Big brother" and Parson being proud of her for doing her duty to the party. This definitely shows how accepting and stupid Parsons is towards the party.

In 1984 the fear of being caught is so big that we dont know if it all was a big show as we only saw parsons from the view of winston
