A Walk in the Woods

Bill Bryson

7

This book is about a man who decides to hike the Appalachian Trail. It describes his struggles, thoughts, and how he changes from his experience on it. This is a comical book, with many small jokes and remarks that had me laughing out loud. It can be slow often, but the fast-moving parts are really fast-moving. Ultimately, it’s an enjoyable read, but takes motivation to finish. It has a lot of facts about the wilderness he hikes.

I took into factor how easy it was to read compared to the length of the book, the good parts, and how I really felt about deciding to read it.

Lesson Learned

In A Walk in the Woods, Bill Bryson, the main character and narrator, learns the lesson that even though you may not finish something important, you learn more from the experience than completing it. This is showed when he decides to not do a large portion of the trail but he feels accomplished thinking about doing at least some of it and trying. This is important for everyone because it’s not always about what you hope to accomplish, it’s what you get out of trying. It’s more important to at least make an attempt than do everything perfectly and not learn anything from it.

The main character, Bill Bryson, changes the most in this novel. He changes mentally, he connects with nature and he walks more often, and he changes physically because he walked so much. He makes the change from not connecting to the earth and being a wimp to sleeping outside and being brave and just transforming his perpective of the outdoors.

This is an image of Hiawassee, Georgia. This is the first stop off the AT Bryson makes after hitting the Appalachian Trail the first time. It is a relief but a little queer, as he meets a woman and man who are drunk-driving a pickup.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwi676-UstLSAhUo8IMKHaxHCBcQjhwIBQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hiawasseega.gov%2Fhotels.html&psig=AFQjCNFAtyIifgeuDTg2PocWdpuVvr6laA&ust=1489457075035733
