Within this lesson plan, I will teach students about substance abuse and its detrimental effect on society. This lesson plan will teach students about the effects of drugs and the harm they can cause to the body and society. I think one of my biggest struggles in this lesson plan would be having it get approved by the school district, But it would be something like D.A.R.E. was when I was a student, and this helped students understand that drugs are dangerous and can cause harm to the user.

School Counselor Competency and Reflection

There are some things that I had more knowledge of, and there were other subjects that I scored low on. I thought the main assessment was very difficult for me because I don't understand any of a school counselor's legal issues and policies just yet. But, during my time in these courses, I am sure to follow my steps to achieve an understanding of all of this information. What really got me during this assessment was how much information I needed to understand the school system and how it operates. I had no idea how complex it was and what school counselors needed to be competent in. I believe that over the span of this program, I will focus on better understanding the competencies that come with being a school counselor and learning more than I have ever had; I believe that all will come with time.

Identify your selected Lesson Plan and Result Report level.

substance abuse, this lesson plan will be taught to 9th graders (Freshman)

In what ways did the selected Mindsets and/or Behaviors match the lesson topic? List one additional Mindset and/or Behavior that you would have selected for the lesson and why.

I chose this lesson plan because it needs to be taught to all students about the damage that addiction can cause. We, as counselors, will be able to see the behavior of these students being taught and explicitly explain to them the damages that drugs can cause.

In what ways do the ASCA Student Standards Pre- and Post-Assessment Items align and not align with the Mindsets and/or Behaviors and topic?

I believe that ASCA student standards align with this lesson plan because it teaches students a concept that they can take with them throughout their lives and use in the real world.

Did the lesson content/materials match the selected Mindsets and/or Behaviors skill? Why or why not?

Yes, this lesson plan matched the selected mindset skill because it shows students to be responsible regarding drugs and the rights and wrongs.

Timing can be important for delivering lessons and holding small group sessions. Yet, timing can also be limited for school counselors when it comes to working with students. Based on your opinion, how do you think that timing may have impacted the results of the lesson?

I think that there is no perfect timing to discuss substance abuse, but it needs to be done. We need to teach these students that these drugs can kill you if it becomes a problem. We need to explain to students that there can be serious problems with their health and mental health when it comes to addiction. I believe that there is no permanent timing for this lesson, but it should be held throughout a student's time in school.

School counselors often share lesson plans with each other when they might experience similar student challenges or topics. However, schools, populations, cultures, developmental levels, and school counselors are unique. How would you modify the lesson plan to align with your creativity, knowledge of the ASCA National Model, and skillset?

One way that I would modify my lesson plan to align with the knowledge of the ASCA model is to teach this lesson plan to younger and older students. Also, show them maybe live speakers that will teach them their experiences of what has happened to them and how they overcame their addiction. I believe bringing in guest speakers would really get the students' attention.
