A. We felt empowered after listening to Lauryn Hill's version of 'A Change is Gonna Come". The message of the song encouraged us to keep hoping for change. We could feel the emotion in her voice as she sang her own version of this song. We could also tell that she really sang with passion.

B. After reading the lyrics, we realized how deep the song actually is. When we first listened to the song we mainly focused on the melody and the overall vibe of the song. Going back and reading the lyrics helped us understand the message behind the song more. The original artist wrote about his past experiences and how his only source of hope was that change will come eventually. We could relate to this because we have also gone through times when our only hope was just thinking that things won't stay the same forever. Even though life can be really tough at times we just have to have hope and keep going.

C. The original artist is Sam Cooke. He was at stake of potentially losing his career and his white fan base because he wrote a song about racism. He was also told that this particular song wouldn't profit as much because of how dark it was compared to his other light hearted songs.

D. The interpretation changed with the more knowledge we obtained from analyzing the lyrics and reading about the purpose of the original song. With the more knowledge we gained the more our interpretation and feelings changed about the context of the original song by Sam Cooke. When we found out the true meaning of the song, we no longer just thought of it as a beautiful song with a nice melody, but as a form of activism to showcase the racism and inequality during the civil rights movement. The initial interpretation was our foundation of understanding the meaning of the song. Both artists sang the song in their own ways but the purpose of the song stayed the same. This song was originally written by Sam Cooke around the same time as the Civil Rights Movement to show his thoughts about racism in America. We feel like this song is so much more than just racism, but can relate to everyone’s agony. The song is meant to give anyone the hope and encouragement they need to keep going.

E. This project gave us the chance to apply our knowledge about rhetoric reading in real life. We were able to take a song and integrate the lyrics so that we could understand the purpose, share our opinions, and see how we can relate to the text by reflecting on our personal experiences. We also had to use different reading strategies in order to get a better understanding of the song. In parts A and B we practiced content reading. We read the lyrics and got the basic gist of the song without doing any deep thinking or research. In part C we went deeper into the lyrics by using function/ feature reading and rhetoric reading strategies. We analyzed the artist's word choice, the order of the lyrics, and how they were organized. After analyzing and doing more research we saw that this song was written to raise awareness about racism and to encourage anyone that listens to never give up. We had the chance to not only look at the artist's personal experiences but also to look back at our own lives and ask ourselves how this song applies to us.
