Hi all, this is kathy thai of BVC. There was something that I didn't have a chance to mention during the discussion in regards to us being framed as "daughters of refugees" that has stuck in my throat long enough after the panel that I may as well put it here:

The "daughters of refugees" comment was something that flabbergasted me. There's so much tied to that, and the appearance of that, which I'm sure the publicist was aware of and thought would be a positive thing to share. It's like, "Look at all these things they are and what they've overcome!" fused into one little phrase. It's not that this is completely untrue, in my case, I go by 'they' as well as 'she' but I'm aware that my mother thinks of me as her daughter, and that at a glance, I fit the image of a "woman" (most of the time), but this is a clear example of the limitations of optics and culturally sensitive discourse. Without having a conversation with me, you risk incorrectly labeling me based on your perceptions. Evidently, this phrase didn't sit well with any of us, we didn't choose it in this context and we weren't consulted about it to begin with.

I think this serves as a reminder to not make assumptions, even if you've 'studied up' or feel like you're 'aware' of a culture. As discussed, cultural communities aren't monoliths, they're made of many people with different opinions, experiences, and narratives.

Thank you all for participating and hearing us today.
