Due to the production of products like coffee, tobacco, and cotton, the importation of slaves was very distinct and often hostile ethnic groups lived side by side. Some free people of color had higher power, but they still lacked some rights within the French system. The bulk of the population was made up of half a million slaves that lived in notoriously bad conditions. Later on, a war for power between the three people of color and former slaves broke out.

During the Napoleonic Wars, the Italian states were temporarily united in the Kingdom of Italy. However, at the end of the wars, the peninsula was divided up again. January 1848 on the birthday of King Ferdinand, the second Neapolitan troops retreated from the island, allowing the rebels to take most of the key towns. Under Ruggero Settimo, they formed a provincial government that followed the old constitution.

In 1889, Brazil became a federal republic after a small coup ousted Emperor Pedro II. However, many were still left disenfranchised, but as a federal republic, parties often only represented state interests. In particular Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo, the most wealthy and important states. The northern interior was left weakened after the abolition of slavery and development of new foreign markets. Plus poor infrastructure and schooling left them isolated and the majority of the population uneducated.

In 1494, the two kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Spain) divided the New World between them in the Treaty of Tordesillas. In 1500, navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral landed in what is now Brazil and claimed it in the name of King Manuel I of Portugal. The Portuguese identified brazilwood as a valuable red dye and an exploitable product and attempted to force indigenous groups in Brazil to cut the trees, but at first gave little attention to the area. Over time, the Portuguese realized that some European countries, especially France, were also sending excursions to Brazil to extract brazilwood, and the Portuguese crown decided to send large missions to take possession of the land by setting up hereditary captaincies, which were largely a failure. Starting in the 16th century, sugarcane production became the base of Brazilian economy and society, with the use of slaves on large plantations to make sugar for export to Europe. Throughout most of the colonial period, the Portuguese settlers fought conflicts with the French and the Dutch for control over the territory. The discovery of gold in the early 18th century ushered in a gold rush, bringing in many new European settlers.

The years preceding 1848 saw difficult times throughout Europe. In 1846, a widespread crop failure that lasted for two seasons caused a quick raise in food prices. In addition, the whole of Europe was experiencing an economic recession, leaving thousands without jobs or a way to purchase the already expensive food. Of course, the working class was hit the hardest by this. Their survival was directly linked to their ability to buy food. With the rise of industrialization, many were already forced out of work as their jobs were replaced by machines. No revolution happens by chance, these were the steps that led Italy toward the revolution in 1848. It thus quickly became clear to many Italians that the Italy created by the Congress of Vienna was inefficient and ineffective. The people started to look for an answer that could help restore the peninsula to a more enlightened and modern state.
