One strength of the Articles was that they unified the states. After the Revolutionary War, the states were all going in different directions. Some states wanted some things for the nation, while other states completely opposed that. The Articles of Confederation made the nation feel whole which gave people a sense of pride. They helped to bring the states together in a collaborative effort to make a new government that would work for everyone. The picture relates to unification because it shows all the people of the U.S coming together after the Articles.

Under the Articles, there was no federal army or navy. Without the tax money, that should have been collected from the people, there was no way to pay for the armed forces. Each state had it's own army which made it difficult to be the "United States." The country barely had a national army which lead to many conflicts of national security. If the government had collected taxes, there would have been an army to protect the country. The picture relates to the topic because it shows the seals of the five military branches. The U.S. needed military branches.

The federal government was allowed to make treaties with other nations and declare war. This was a great idea to give these powers to the federal government. If the states had these powers, it could be possible that every state would be at war with the same country. The federal government could negotiate foreign affairs which was good because if the states could do this, it would be as if each state was it's own country. The picture shows the foreign country's flags which relates to the topic because the Articles of Confederation gave Congress the power to negotiate with other countries.

Under the Articles of Confederation, there was no national court system which meant one major thing. There was no higher court to appeal your case to. Many cases must have gone undecided or with an unjust verdict because of biases. People had to accept the verdict of their courts without question because there was nobody else to present the questioned case to. If there was a national court system, the process of determining a case verdict would be more fair. The picture relates to the topic because it shows an American flag and a gavel. Both items are associated with justice and the court.

The Articles of Confederation allowed the federal and state governments to coin and borrow money. They had the power to make money and collect money in the states. The states could ask for money, but they couldn't demand it. Each state had it's own currency which was though of as a great idea at first. The writers of the Articles favored a weak central government, that is why the states had this power. The picture relates to the topic because the Articles allowed the states to print their own money, money is being printed in the picture.

Money is also listed as a strength, but it has it's downsides as well. Since each state was given the power to it's own currency, the states began to raise prices on items from other states. States began to over produce money which led to inflation. Inflation is the increase of prices and the reduction of monetary value. The money began to lose it's value which caused problems with trade, the government, and businesses. If there was a national currency, money would have been better managed in and out of the country. This picture relates to the topic because it shows the money, whose value went down. It also shows a graph of the prices that went up during the period of inflation.

Summary

The Articles of Confederation was a document that started the United States of America. They had many strengths and weaknesses that would later on be significant. The strengths of the Articles include the unification of the states, relations with foreign nations, treaties, and money. The weakness also include money, the court system, and the armed forces. The Articles of Confederation failed because they lacked the structure of a strong central government. Many powers were given to the states and it caused a lot of chaos. After Shay's rebellion, (an event in which armed protesters led by Daniel Shay tried to take over the government.) the delegates from every state except for Georgia met up for the 2nd Continental Congress in Philadelphia. They discussed their ideas and that is how we have the Constitution. Our Constitution lays out the basic rules of the federal and state government. It also contains citizen rights. We still use the Constitution up to this day.
