Piggy is viewed as useless. Everyone says, no he's not, but the thing is, they don't use his talents. He is portrayed as the clever kid who no one listens to. If the group listened to him he would be the most useful character, but all they use him for is his glasses. He did have the idea to blow the conch, but Ralph got the credit. He also had the idea to collect the names, but was overwhelmed when Ralph told him to collect every name and because of this he ended up failing. He is looked down on because he is fat and not listening to him might be everyone's downfall.

"He can't hurt you: but if you stand out of the way he'd hurt the next thing. And that's me"(93). We all know that Piggy is the smartest but also the most physically challenged. And that Jack is probably the farthest away from being civilized and the deepest into savagery. And we all know that Jack hates Piggy. For me, I don't entirely know why Jack hates Piggy. But I do know that Jack will hurt Piggy in a heartbeat. Maybe even think of killing Piggy. If you think about it, Jack probably sees Piggy as a problem. And what is a way to get rid of that problem? Killing Piggy. I believe that when Ralph is finally unable to control Jack and is unable to protect Piggy, Jack will get rid of him.

Now Ralph could use piggy as a sort of advisor.

In the first few chapters, and especially in the first and second, Ralph really just wanted everyone to have fun but also wanted to survive. In chapter 5, you see a big shift in his priorities. The idea of having fun is much, much less more important now and he even says ""We need an assembly. Not for fun. Not for laughing and falling off the log-" (79). I thought this shift was really interesting because it showed be how much they've all changed a lot from when they arrived.

But the way they are describing it in their dreams; the fighting with the evil in the forest, I think it represents them. They are the evil in the forest, and the bit of civilization they have left in them is trying to show them that. It could also represent what their choices could lead to, which is fighting.

Ralph tries to be nice and helpful to them and talks in a way that is easy for them to understand. He tries to calm them and make them more comfortable. When Jack speaks to them he yells at them and dosent care how they feel. Jack wants them to know how he feels even of they are to young. I think that this proves that it was right to elect Ralph chief because he is more caring and wants everyone to feel safe.

He's tired of being a leader, and arguing, and trying to keep everyone working. I can tell that he is stressed out and the littluns telling all their stories isn't helping him either. Everyone is scared and he can't do anything about it maybe that's why he wants to quit being chief.

"What I mean is, maybe it's only us," (89). This was a lot, especially coming from a small boy's mouth. It makes a lot of sense though, they are becoming savages, animalistic in their nature the longer they are on the island. Jack is down on all fours hunting, the littluns are pooping everywhere, and they can't even hold a serious meeting. Simon realizing this sets him aside from the other boys. Unlike the others, he recognises the ways they are acting and he wants to be more civilized. Like Ralph, his main goals are civilization and rescue.

"What would a beast eat?"
"Pig."
"We eat pig" (83). I find it really interesting that Piggy told the group this, especially because Jack would be angry about it. He is basically telling everyone that they could be the beasts on the island. I think that the two prominent sides/groups on the island (Ralph and Jack as leaders) will think at one point that the other is a beast. I also find it interesting that two people touched on the fact that they could be the beasts. Simon said in relation to if there was a beast or not, "What I mean is... maybe it's only us" (89). I think that because both Piggy and Simon have talked about this theory, Ralph's "group" of people will most likely adapt this theory and believe that the beast on the island is themselves.

This also shows how Piggy can see the transformation of Jack and the hunters from civilized children to savages.

I was surprised at how friendly Piggy and Ralph were. In the beginning of the book, Ralph didn't want anything to do with Piggy. Now, he's realizing that Piggy and Simon are the only people who understand the importance of keeping civil. Everyone else wants to have fun, so they go with Jack. I don't think that they will get everyone else to become civil again. It's going to start getting a lot more chaotic.

I think that he is going to go crazy and do something he shouldnt. Jack is starting to get violent towards Ralph and Piggy and he dosent really care about anyone but himself. I think that if Jack had become chief thing on the island would be even crazier then they are now, and there would be no systems of getting things done.

You can already see how his power is slipping when Jack starts talking without the conch and the openly challenges Ralph's power when he forsakes the rules. He also distinctly challenges Piggy's right to speak with conch in hand and harasses him when he tries to speak.

Jack's savagery, bloodlust, and anger seems to be increasing each chapter. In Chapter 4, he gets into a fight with Piggy over the fire and Piggy's specs. In Chapter 5, he gets more aggressive, not just with Piggy but with everyone. He yells and curses at the littluns, chastising them. When he finally is able to kill a pig, he continues to want to kill. Not for food, but for the blood. He seems to obsess over killing. His savagery, starting from hunting on all fours to his camouflaged hunting face, is growing. The line between him being civilized and being animalistic is getting smaller and thinner. He has already harmed one of the boys, when he punched Piggy. I believe he won't be satisfied by killing any longer, he wants to hurt someone. He wants to hurt the boys.

The beastie coming from the sea is so scary because the sea is the unknown. If the beast was in the sea the hunters couldn't exactly go kill it. The sea is unexplored, there are creatures lurking down there that they can't even imagine. But the sea is also their lifeblood, they use the sea for food, bathing, and cooling down in the hot sun. The sea is a mystery, an element of surprise that gives and takes and could strike at any moment. The boys wouldn't know the beastie was coming for them until it was too late.

I think the reason everyone got even more scared when Percival said that the beast came from the water, was because before that, Jack reassured everyone by saying that there was nothing to be afraid of because he had been all over the island and he hadn't seen a beast. But Jack hasn't been in the water. Now there's a possibility that the beast is actually real, everyone is more scared.

I noticed that the only people that really do anything to try to get rescued is Ralph, Piggy, and Simon. Not even the people, who were supposed to keep the signal fire going, could resist the thrill of the hunt. This makes me theorize that with only 3 people that care about getting rescued it's impossible to do everything so they can get rescued. It takes at least 2 people to keep the fire going so there would only be one other person to do the rest.

"The fire is the most important thing on the island. How can we ever be rescued except by luck, if we don't keep a fire going?"(80) This quote shows that Ralph's priority is still getting rescued and keeping the fire going is the only way that can happen. Maintaining it shows that the boys still care about being rescued and want to leave the island.

Although we see Piggy as the smartest and the brains of the group, Simon definitely shows his intelligence by saying that they(the boys) are the beasts. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe he is right away shut down and ignored throughout the whole meeting. Piggy is very logical but I feel that Simon is more intelligent because he looks deeper than the surface. He is also a lot more mature because he isn't as afraid if the unknown unlike the others. In all, I just believe that Simon is a really great character and is a lot more intelligent than he seems.

I feel bad for the littluns because they're treated so poorly. The biguns have lost all consideration to the fact that the littluns are at least half their age and quite frankly, their mental age and maturity. The littluns still rely heavily on parental support, and it's hard for them to receive that while stranded on an island with boys that have completely separate priorities. Jack mistreats the littluns and calls them crybabies, but the funny thing is that I don't think Jack would have been able to handle himself any better than them if he were their age and in their shoes.
