Alternatively referred to as a video game, a game is software code designed to entertain or educate an individual. Today, computer gaming is a big business, and there are millions of different computer games that are enjoyed by people of all ages.

https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/g/game.htm

The knowledge and skills acquired through game-based learning are retained longer than information from other learning methods. Effective learning process is one in which you are fully involved in what you are doing. In order to make learning effective, game-based learning requires games that are well designed and have well implemented learning tasks. A well-designed educational game could combine the learning objectives of the educational system with the fun, finished product of a commercial game and custom built games. Games designed specifically for the purpose of educating children can motivate self learning and problem-solving skills to a great extent. Game-Based Learning simply means including knowledge matter of subject into games. All types of games are learning processes, be it casual gaming for fun, or something serious.

https://theknowledgereview.com/importance-game-based-learning-modern-education/

GAME BASED LEARNING

Game-based learning refers to the borrowing of certain gaming principles and applying them to real-life settings to engage users (Trybus 2015). The motivational psychology involved in gamebased learning allows students to engage with educational materials in a playful and dynamic way. Game-based learning is not just creating games for students to play, it is designing learning activities that can incrementally introduce concepts, and guide users towards an end goal. Traditional games can incorporate competition, points, incentives, and feedback loops. These concepts have become increasingly popular in higher education and in libraries as a way to engage students in learning.

https://acrl.ala.org/IS/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/spring2015.pdf

The core concept behind game-based learning is teaching through repetition, failure and the accomplishment of goals. Video games are built on this principle. The player starts off slow and gains in skill until they’re able to skillfully navigate the most difficult levels. Games that are planned and designed well will offer enough difficulty to keep it challenging while still being easy enough for the player to win.

https://thelearningcounsel.com/article/why-game-based-learning

1) Decreases Student Attention Span - Students may begin to expect the same kind of responses from all parts of their education and won’t find it, leading to frustration.

2) Cost - There may be equipment costs, software costs, and training costs for instructors. Sometimes these costs are passed on the students through registration fees and course codes that must be purchased, creating a higher barrier for entry into the classroom.

https://tophat.com/blog/gamified-learning/

3) Mental Effects - For instance, children may want to play until they win or advance in the game. This determination can cause low self-esteem or aggressive behavior, especially if children keep losing at the game. Additionally, because these games can become so addicting, overuse can cause social isolation and poor social skills.

4) Negative Behaviors - If a game requires children to “shoot” at objects or people, it may encourage violence. Your child may want to copy some of these behaviors with friends or family members.

5) Physical Strain - It's easy for children to feel addicted to computer and online games, and they will sit in a certain spot for hours on end playing them. This long-term use can result in neck aches, back aches, repetitive strain injuries, eyestrain, headaches, fatigue and mood swings.

https://itstillworks.com/12328164/the-disadvantages-of-using-games-as-a-learning-tool

6) If games aren’t designed correctly, it could be a disadvantage to the learner’s thinking.Games may be a source of distraction and waste of time.

https://saraaugust.wordpress.com/2016/05/08/pros-cons-of-game-based-learning/
