My favorite character in the novel is Shay, Tally's friend because she's outgoing and very rebellious. I like how she follows her heart and doesn't care of others opinion. Shay really isn't like anyone else, she really is her own self an will do whatever she wants, she's very impulsive, whereas others are a bit more scared and will follow the rules and be less rebellious like Tally. For example, when Shay ran away to the Smoke to join her friends that are against the surgery. Her friend are at the Smoke to hide, therefore they can't get the surgery, whereas Shay stays at the smoke to hide but also to fight against it.

My least favorite character is Maddy, David's mom and the creator of the Smoke. The first time we meet her is when David presents Tally to his parents and Maddy seems nice and accepting, but I really dislike her attitude at the end of the book, when the Smokies are being rescued. I think she should have let Tally say goodbye to David and let her make sure he was going to be ok. I think she was being selfish and heartless. She says she didn't let Tally talk to David because it may change her mind about going back to the city but what if not talking to David means Tally will never get out of New Pretty City because she did not clear things out with David and he hasn't forgiven her. If she had talked to him and realized the damage would take time to be repaired, she would have stayed to show to David being with him is all she wants now. What Maddy did reminds me of a situation in a book a read. In the book, the main character has been chosen to try and win the Prince's heart and when they come to her house to bring her to the castle, she barely has any time to say goodbye to her family and during her stay in the palace, her father dies. She was really sad and I think the feeling she has that she did not get a chance to say a proper goodbye to him will follow her for a long long time and it will hurt a lot.

What I liked about part 3 is that what we thought about the personalities and what I anticipated that the characters would do in the beginning of the book were completely different in the end of the book. For example, in the beginning Tally was really for getting the pretty surgery and that Shay wasn't for the surgery, but in the end, Tally was trying to convince everyone not to get the surgery and Shay , in the end,, had the surgery even though it wasn't her choice. Therefore, I like how we can't really guess what will happen in the book. I didn't dislike much about part 3, but I'm in between liking and disliking the cliff-hanger. It is a really good cliff-hanger, Tally gives herself up to Special Circumstances and get the pretty surgery because Maddy had created a pill that would make the brain lesions go away and therefore makes you want to read the rest of the series to know what will happen after. I generally don't like cliff-hangers because I like to know what happens at the end of the book and not have to read multiple books to know what happens. These are the reason I'm not so sure about liki

I strongly recommend this book because it features a strong and courageous woman. Tally is faced with so many obstacles through out the book and she manages to overcome them. She learns to have a mind of her own and gets to know what she really wants and how she wishes to live. Uglies shows us a complete different way to live, something we are not used to, but I feel like there are similar things with how the people in Uglies live and how we live. In our time, it is important for women and men to be «perfect» like it is for uglies to become pretty. We created a society that gives its population a image of what's ideal when really you don't have to be that perfect image to be happy. I think it's a great book to read because it gives you another outlook on life and it makes you think. I also feel like the main character, Tally, can be a great figure for some people because she finds herself and shows us it's not easy following who we are but it's what make us happy and it's worth it.

The plan backfires and makes Shay even uglier, but smarter. When Tally and David first meet Shay after her surgery, they were dumbfounded at how smart and calm Shay has gotten. They also realized that she looked like a mix of a pig and a unicorn.

David then falls in love with Shay, not because of her looks but for her personality. Tally is heartbroken and can't forgive Shay for being smarter than her and can't get over it. She tries to kill herself, but something magical happens.

Themes

The first theme that I chose is appearance, because throughout the whole book they talk about their appearance and about turning pretty. Everything is all about their physic, pretties will only be friends with pretties, uglies will only be friends with uglies, there's no mix-match. A person will be friends with you just by judging your looks and if you look like them and are in the same "category" as them, not by your personality. I think that when Tally said in the beginning of the book : "Shay! Come on. It's just for fun. Making ourselves feel ugly is not fun. We are ugly!" (p.43), it just shows how the surgery isn't really serious, its just like a game, they care more about their appearance and not the consequences that can come with it.

The second theme that I chose that's represented in the novel is identity. I chose this theme, because as we can see in the book, Tally is very indecisive of if she wants to become a "pretty" or to stay an "ugly". Throughout the book, Tally tries to find her identity and who she really is. Moreover, as a teen turns into a "new pretty", their whole identity as a human being and as an "ugly" is completely changed. It makes a whole 180°. As a "pretty", people act like robots, it's as if they were controlled by someone else and they aren't themselves. They never work, they don't have chores, they don't have things that the "uglies" have. All they do is have fun and party. While, "uglies" act just fine and are normal. They have chores to do, work to do and have responsibilities and barely have time to have fun like the "pretties". Furthermore, the society perceives the people very differently from what they really are. Tally said : "You go to parties, Shay? While everyone here is locked up? Well I guess so" said Shay (p.366) I think that this quote fits well with this theme, because as we can see, after Shay's surgery she acts exactly like a pretty. She goes to parties.

Conflicts - É

They are two main conflicts in this book. The first one is man versus society. Tally does not accept herself as she is, until she meets David. The society made her believe that to be happy, you have to get the operation to be pretty or else you're miserable for the rest of your life. When she meets David, she realizes that she can be loved and accepted even as an «ugly». Maria Montessori said : «Free the child's potential, and you will transform him into the world.». I think it represents well enough this conflict because society is trying to control what children think because they are young and their thoughts can be formed as wished by the older ones. In Uglies, society arranges the teaching to make the young ones, uglies, think a certain way about how life should be and how they are comfortable in the city, how living outside the city is not the way to live and how being pretty is the only way you can be happy. The thing is, becoming pretty makes everyone more stupid and they don't realize they are not themselves anymore and this enables society to control them even more. I believe this conflict represents us a little bit because our minds are kind of controlled by the older ones. When we are young, we are told what to do and what is right and wrong, they don't let us fond that by ourselves. The second conflict is man versus man. Throughout the book, Tally is faced with many difficult decisions and those decisions make her change who she is and what she believes in. At first, she hated herself because she was ugly and only dreamed about being pretty, even if her friend Shay told her many times she was not ugly. Than she is faced with an ultimatum, becoming pretty or staying ugly for the rest of her life, she decides to betray her friend to become pretty. Once she arrives to the Smoke, she discovers a whole new world and starts to realize she can be happy and ugly at the same time. In the Smoke, she finds a place where she can really be who she is and feel like herself. She meets David who shows her that she can be loved and accepted even if she hasn't got the operation. And when she discovers that getting the surgery to become pretty means you'll have a lesion and you won't control you thoughts and actions, it convinces her that she is better living in the Smoke with «real» people. The quote I think represents well this conflict is : «Wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it. Right is right even if only you are doing it». In the book, Tally is not the only one to go to the Smoke but they are only a few and going to the Smoke seems like the right thing to do because if they don't do it, they will lose themselves after the surgery. I feel like this conflict can represent us all as well because all our lives we are like Tally, trying to figure out who we are and what we want.

She succeeds to escape into the forest by spraying the pepper that the boss brought, but gets caught because we heard her breathe. Therefore we threw her in a rabbit pen and captured many of her friends too and put them in the rabbit pen too.

The protagonist in the novel is Tally. Tally is an ugly that's really self-conscious, she really cares about what others think about her. Whereas Shay doesn't really care about what others think bout her, she's more self-centered and thinks for herself. Tally will do anything to help her friends. She is a loving and caring person and will put others ahead of her. A similarity that they have, is that they're both adventurous, but at different levels, we can see that Tally wants to be more like Shay.

Antagonist - É

The antagonist is Special Circumstances. Special Circumstances is in the book the substitution for what we have that is called government. They shaped the civilization so they only think like the Specials want them to. They only have one idea of what is pretty and how they should live. Special Circumstances antagonize Tally, because at the beginning of the book, her only perspective is to become pretty, but when she discovers the Smoke and that she can be loved even if she hadn't have the surgery, Special Circumstances get in her way and still manage to make her turn pretty, even if it's not what she wants anymore. The way Special Circumstances shape the minds of their civilization reminds me of a book/movie: Divergent. The story is about a girl that doesn't fit in her society and the leaders want to eliminate everyone like her. I find it similar to Uglies because in Divergent, they don't accept people that are not «normal», that don't fit in, and in Uglies, they don't accept people that don't want to turn pretty and be «normal».
