The Confederate General John Bell Hood had many losses before this battle. His forces were outnumbered greatly the North had 55,000 soldiers while the South only had 30,000. There were a total of 9061 casualties and the majority of them were the south, 6000 Confederate soldiers. Hood was positioned at the south of Nashville hoping to draw the north into a costly attack. The Union General George Thomas received orders from Grant and Lincoln telling him to quit stalling and attack them already. They even threatened to fire him. This caused him to attack immediately, their units were a hodgepodge of units put together. The Battle of Nashville was very significant because it ended the war in Tennessee. After the fall of Tennessee, it was only a matter of time before the confederacy had fallen. Hood's army completely fell apart after this loss. Even though there was a decent amount of loss in this battle it was relatively short it started on December 15th of 1864 and went until December 16th of the same year. Even though General George Thomas was only in the lead for two battles of the Civil War he helped majorly shape the war beyond the Appalachian mountains. He was born into a slaveholding family in Virginia, and he attended West Point for his training. John Bell Hood was also a West Point graduate and was one of the most rapidly promoted members of the Confederate army. He had served in the military for Texas before the war. Even though this battle is less known it is a major battle in ending the Civil war.

In the end of the Civil War everyone was done with the blood shed and the lack of resources and the struggle of ending the war. The document shows the notification of a battle being reported in Nashville. It informed the War Department for the Union. The point of view of this source is from someone that is urgent to introduce the battle for later decisions through out the battle.

This document is showing the infiltration the Union has on the Confederacy and how the Confederacy is asking for more men to join arms in their movement. The poster is being used to inform the public on the need for men on the battle field. The poster also shows the time change from 1861 to the start date of the Battle of Nashville. The Confederacy needed men in the beginning, but as the Union got closer to infiltrating the South, the Battle of Nashville was showing the tired ways of war and blood shed that has been brought to american soil.

significance of the battle of Nashville

https://www.battlefields.org/learn/civil-war/battles/nashville

The battle of Nashville in my opinion is a very important battle that a lot of people overlook. The battle only lasted for one day and had nine thousand casualties. The Generals involved in the fighting had not been in many other battles throughout the war as the head generals. The battle even took place later in the war towards the end. Even though Gettysburg is seen as the battle that ended the South completely making them realize they were going to lose I think this battle had a similar impact but on the South. After Hood's defeat in the Battle of Nashville, his defenses completely fell apart, and it was the last battle held in Tennessee. Tennessee lost seventy-five percent of its battle force in this battle and stopped being a threat to the Union. The majority of the Civil War was fought in the South, and after losing an entire state the end of the Confederacy was just on the horizon. The morality of the South was completely demolished after this They were starstruck an estimated 13,000 African-American soldiers fought in this battle which at this point in the War was the single most in any battle. Memphis and Nashville were two very important cities to the Confederacy at this point and time. When they lost both of these cities the war was over and the Confederacy knew it. I believe that the battle of Nashville should be taught more in classes, because until I was assigned this I had never heard of it, and The battle of Nashville was a major point in the war.
