Skills and conditions needed for teacher collaboration by EUN Partnership aisbl

Do you agree with the list of skills and conditions mentioned as necessary for teacher collaboration to flourish in schools? What would you add to this list based on your experiences? Does the leadership in your teacher training institution or the current school in which you teach model collaboration? If so, how, and do you think this is motivating and beneficial for students? Do you work with teachers who are sceptical about collaboration, and what have you/will you try to help them see the advantages of this way of working?

I agree about the list of competences and conditions mentioned as necessary for the collaboration of teachers to grow in schools. Add to this list based on my experience the ability to tolerate the frustrations that may be in working with colleagues. A good leadership in the institution of a teacher is fundamental to the teaching and professional success of the teacher group. Collaboration among teachers is beneficial for students who can better develop their knowledge, skills and abilities. Working with teachers who are skeptical of collaboration is difficult and I am convinced that only by experiencing them the benefits of group work can one also convince the most skeptical teachers.

In Italy in secondary schools where I teach, we have the socalled "Dipartimenti": teachers are divided for subject's area and they plan togheter the yearly program, the assessment rubrics and other activities. So it's natural to work in team and to became a good team member because it's the school itself that carry you in a such disposition. Anyway I agree with the teacher trainer in the video: colaboration is something more then sharing. As members of a team we can also have arguments ( and usually during long Department meetings there are a lot of arguments.....) but the most important thing is sitting around a table, debating, but coming up with a solution at the end. To sum up: for me colaboration is improving my professionl motivation by being ready to change my mindset

I agree with what she says - I really liked the idea of modelling for the students. As I am a student teacher myself I haven't experienced much of this first hand in schools however, at the university I attend the faculty staff do collaborate with each other to teach us. They also get students to collaborate with each other however we have never been told HOW to work collaboratively - its been assumed that we will know! I think this is something to be improved upon and something I will take note of in my own practice.

I would add that Teachers be prepared to listen and think through issues with their colleagues, Analytical and critical thinking skills are important in Teachers and Students, we should strive to improve in these areas. We at our school are trying something new this year, working with Teachers from other departments to develop and learn from each other as part of our CPD. Yes I would say that some Teachers are sceptical about collaboration. When change is about to happen there will always be an issue relating to change. But Teachers need to be open minded about change and look at the benefits. One excellent comment I heard about Teacher Collaboration was. "Half the effort, double the Outcome". I feel that comment made by a Teacher from a different school was excellent in summarizing the benefits of Teacher Collaboration

Attitude is relevant because ego must be set aside as it often gets in the way and affects the collaboration process and so the final result could be a failure.

I totally agree with what asserted by Mrs.Dempsey. Teacher need knowledge, of course, but mostly they need attitudes around wanting to collaborate; this is the most dofficult thing for me...it's not that I don't want to, it's simply that I am not used to it; I am used to do things y myself, and this is an attitude that I have in every aspect of my life. I may be able to ask for suggestion, but then either I watch people doing (and I learn, this way, new things) or I do by myself. It really is a question of personal attitude, habit, ability... Then teachers need to have the skills for communication, and this is something that I think I am not lacking... for dealing with conflict, and about this I must admit that "it depends" but I think I am able to deal with them, and most of all they need to have a motivation...The first thing I need to do is removing my own prejudices against collaboration. Maybe "prejudices" is not the right word, it's more a question of capability of working with someone. Maybe once removed this obstacle, it will be easier for me to think in terms of planning collaborative work for my students.

To collaborate, teachers need knowledge, attitudes, and skills such as communicating, listening, being open to criticism, working with others, coping with conflict. They also need motivation, something that makes them want to work together.
As everyone knows, teachers are reference models for students. It is important that the actions of the teachers reflect the behaviors that we expect from the students. So, if we want them to learn and work collaboratively, then we should do it.
I think the advantages of collaborative work become clear as soon as we give it a chance.

I perceive the collaboration of teachers as a team working and in which all team members communicate as in a network. In order to achieve notable results, teachers working collaboratively should have, beyond their professional skills, a host of other psycho-social skills (energizing, empathic, organizational, playful, interrelated). I believe that the efficiency of collaborative work depends essentially on the trust that team members have in the expertise of each member of the team. At school level, is working collaboratively with good results in small teams. The more team members are, the lower the efficiency and the explanations are many and subjective. Experience shows that teams with members who share common concerns outside of school also work very well. The interest of skeptical teachers for collaborative activities should be stimulated, as with students, by gradually including them in already established teams.

I believe that the conditions for the emergence, development and maintenance of collaboration between teachers in institutions has in part much to do with motivation. I do not know how it is in Europe, but in Latin America as a rule (I dare say) there is no real recognition of the role of teachers. This is discouraging and when other factors such as living in rural areas, where the teacher has to travel a long way to go to school, or return home at the end of the daily educational day, it is quite difficult "to remove "Extra time to carry out activities that allow the exchange of ideas and generate agreements to undertake a project of this magnitude. However, thinking positively and with an attitude that is willing to bring about changes that strengthen the impact of the common effort, following the same objective, I believe that it is indispensable to have a high level of responsibility and commitment on the part of the members of that team collaborative Therefore, identification with the project must be generated with absolute clarity of what the obstacles to be overcome and if there is a commitment to reach the end.

Among the skills to consider are: developing a positive attitude towards change, accepting other participants with the usual respect, communicating clearly and directly and also importantly, avoiding problems by learning to resolve conflicts.
Thanks for your attention. A favourable environment which is involving, even the young teachers get easily involved and since they feel part of a group they are willing to share ideas and new tools. The school administration wants us to collaborate and teachers even have a common free afternoon that was created for that purpose.

Teacher collaboration requires those skills and conditions we also would like to develop in our students by means of collaboration. If we teachers want to learn from each other's experience, why should there necessarily be the need to foster leadership skills? The example given in the video illustrated that colleagues shared responsibility and were expected to invest their expertise for the common goal, so the technology expert was responsible for the technological aspect of work. Ideally the initially allocated roles would sooner or later become interchangeable because collaboration should create synergy effects between team members. Teachers need entrepreneurial skills for teacher collaboration, they need to step out of the comfort zone of their didactic routine, be eager to challenge their teaching practice and demonstrate a willingness to grow professionally.
At our school we have certain interdisciplinary experts groups which deal with certain topics as regards school development, but little institutionalized space for curriculum planning.
Currently I am involved in creating an eTwinning team at our school and learn how much it is a sensitive issue to raise curiosity in some teachers, ill-equipped with technology and project work, to inspire them to become changemakers.

Teachers are asked for collaborative skills, they have to be “openmind” to others: be willing to listen each others, accept and discuss wath others suggest and, on the other hand, share own opinions, suggestions, propose solutions and so on. I think effective and efficient collaboration is comparable to “good communication”: there is no communication if we don’t listen to each others!

I fully agree with the list. At my school we try to work collaboratively with the little time we have. Speaking in general, in the Portuguese reality, everything would be easier if the compulsory bureaucratic work of our schools would diminish, we would have more time for what we like more to do, to work cooperatively and in an interdisciplinary way. Another point that I think is fundamental is the encouragement and motivation given by the directions of the school. Sometimes we continue to work collaboratively because we believe that learning is most effective and we work almost to the point of exhaustion, and we do it because we love what we do. If the school project were to work collaboratively, supported by management, then all other "minor" jobs that take up so much time, without great quality, would disappear and be much more open to collaborative work. Classes with large numbers of students, teachers with a lot of workload are not facilitating factors for collaborative work. After all, I have the good fortune to be part of a working group, with an innovative project, in which the learning scenarios and the collaborative work is our day to day. We must be cordeal, accept the criticisms that make us grow, available, like and believe in what we do for the happiest and most knowledgeable students.

I totally agree with the list of skills and conditions to work collaboratively. The culture of each teacher, the way he was taught, the culture of school and the conditions given for collaboration (time) are determinant to tack collaboration. At school we have 50' to collaborate every week. This is done for every department. It's difficult to plan and work together during only 50' but it's a start and we're improving. Leadership is essencial but not easy because some teachers don't trust each others and sometimes they really have reasons not to trust

The leadership in my school encourages collaboration, but he didn't model a suitable environment yet. As teachers, we are supposed to work collaboratively in team called Departments, grouped by subjects, but it doesn't happen indeed. The majority of teachers, they prefer not to change anything in their way of teaching and in their approach, as it's so confortable to do the same stuff again and again! When I told them about the eTwinning projects, they just nod smiling, and that's all

I agree with the list of skills and conditions, but according to my personal experience, I think that more spaces and specific times should be promoted for collaborative work in school. One of the biggest constraints I face is that some teachers claim they do not have the time. Sometimes teachers do not feel safe, they do not like to be exposed to criticism, they are not receptive to change ... they like to keep their practices over time ...
Teacher meetings that serve to decide the implementation of curricula and benchmarking tools to be used by all do not focus on solving problems encountered by students or on outlining common strategies. I think there is a need for real leadership on the part of the managers, there is a lack of collaborative work that promotes the rotation in the roles to play and promotes the leadership capacity ... normally the professors hold the positions for long years.
To motivate colleagues I try to make myself available to produce materials together, share knowledge and above all motivate for curriculum development through the implementation of projects ...

Our school values collaboration up to a certain point since it is quite traditional and hierarchical too. In my school, we have only 1 hour in common (all teachers) each week , to do collaborative work: plan lessons, discuss a topic, make formative tests, use new technologies to improve student engagement, and so on. Usually, there are teacher meetings with the same subject, Maths teachers, English teachers, and so on. We share what we do and accept ideas from the others, at least in my Maths group, but 1 hour, is few time to do a good job. Teachers get unmotivated and tired because it is a lot of work and little time to do it. For example: with the work I have at school, and then the work at home for school, (and of course I've family that needs me), I can only work in this MOOC at night, sometimes very tired and with classes next morning. They're often old teachers, who don't like technologies, but they can teach me many many tips on leadership, the control of class, the capacity to mantain the energies along my daily works with students. To help them see the advantages of this way of working I think that it's important to plan a valid work group structure, giving to everyone a specific role.
Paola Patrizia Cardo Italy For the skills listed, everything is ok even if I think a very important one is that ability to manage, build, and support the relationship with the subject in formation. I think skills are important to you to collaborate, but sometimes it's a bit difficult because there may be hindering dynamics: mutual prejudices, wrong initial expectationslack of will to cooperate, jealousy and more. We should, however, often make a constant and critical analysis in our professional work, especially when it is expressed in "emergency" actions for which prompt response and little space are required of reflection in the "here and now" n my school, we try to always have a constant dialogue and confrontation, we try to share the different points of view in the perspective of a global and coherent path for the individual.

Teacher's collaboration is really important even if difficult to reach at a large scale. Increasingly we are planning learning units which involve the participation of more subjects inside the curriculum. The only place where we have discussed the implementation of the learning unit so far, has been the consiglio di classe at the beginning of the school year. It seems that most teachers are skeptical about this new kind of teaching approach but I think that it could be really motivating for our students. Last year I attended a course based on the construction of collaborative learning units through a digital tool, called curriculum mapping which I found very useful for sharing information but above all for analysing the goals each subject pursued for the realization of the final project inside each classroom. I invited my colleagues into the platform and even if very slowly we started collaborating to construct our learning units It's just the beginning of a new slow process which I hope can represent the first step of a greater collaboration.

So what we can do to improve motivation and collaboration? What are the examples we wanna give to our students? Even if the system is wrong, full of bad features and not giving back the effort ... we have to make it happen, for us, for our future students!

Majella made some very interesting points in the piece. I know that, as a teacher, I have a particular skill set that may serve my pupils well. but I also know that other teachers on my staff have other skills, which I don't possess, but which would also lead to more engaging and effective lessons for my students. If I could 'buy' these additional skills and experiences online, I would be waiting expectantly outside my classroom door for the courier to arrive with the box of skills and experiences. So, why would I be reluctant to avail of the vast amount of experiences and skills that lie in the staff room, just across the corridor. We are probably one of the greatest resources each other has - collaboration can release this enormous potential.

Consuming too much time, recognition of the advantages of this work methodology has to be progressive, preferably demonstrated through concrete examples (by "induction"). It is of utmost importance that the different levels of school management (in particular departments) disseminate the good practices and their respective advantages related to the teaching and learning processes.
Of course, many of the skills required for collaborative work derive from lifelong education, from how we overcame difficulties and from the characteristics of the people who most influenced our way of dealing with situations.
Perhaps for this reason, collaborative work among teachers already shows different levels of development between countries.

About the roles of each teacher as member of a collaborative group I think another one is necessary: someone who is really in touch with the world around, someone who can stimulate colleagues- and students- to consider subject from always new and up-to-date perspectives. If you have to start working with a new methodology we have to be sure that the subject we propose is at least as challenging as it

We don't collaborate with our principle or with our colleagues, we share our experiences during our breaks and we can get advises or support for older teachers, but we don't work in a team. That's why I am here. I want to learn how to change my mindsets, and then, my colleague's mindsets, how to change this individualism. I don't even have colleagues opened to collaboration in my school, they all are skeptical about collaboration, but I knew on Facebook some people opened to that from my town and, from this summer, we started meeting at our local library and have some workshops and discussions sessions with the goal to start a community of collaboration. We are from different schools and this is a big challenge, but we are focused now to share our vision with others and challenge them to be part of our team.

In order for teachers to collaborate, they must have the skills listed, but among all the most important is the motivation to achieve a common goal, otherwise the initial enthusiasm diminishes, until it disappears completely. I have little experience of collaboration, and only for some short-term projects. I would very much like to go beyond the individualistic way of teaching and finding ways to collaborate in a constant way with my colleagues, but perhaps what I miss is the competence of the leader.

This video has inspired me to invite sceptical teachers to observe the process and otcomes of successful collaborative teaching and learning to change their attitude. I cannot but agree more that collaboration is motivating and beneficial for both teachers and students. For example, in our school there is a huge gap in methodology used by experienced and young teachers. If those teachers could come together or at least plan a lesson, there would be a chance of putting a bridge between using traditional and modern methods.

I agree. I change my routine because no class is the same , no student is just like his classmate , so I like to work with groups. I divide the class into 3 or 4 groups and I give them task according to their level. It is hard to prepaire and not easy at all but it is rewarding.

The conditions and skills necesarry are really well presented, and I do agree they are necessary. Regarding leadership I agree that a less hierarchical position would benefit the students as well, but then the team of teachers have to be really well known to you, and each to know what they are supposed to bring to the table, or at least know what their strongest points are, otherwise you need someone to step up just to give each their role.

Most key conditions for effective teacher collaboration—such as trust, shared goals, communication, and time for planning—are valid. However, additional important factors include psychological safety, clear roles, protected collaboration time, conflict management skills, and regular reflection.

Strong leadership plays a crucial role when it actively models collaboration, supports teachers in practice, and involves them in decision-making. This increases motivation and improves consistency in teaching, which benefits students.

Some teachers may be skeptical about collaboration, often due to past negative experiences or workload concerns. This can be addressed by starting with small steps, demonstrating clear benefits, respecting teacher autonomy, and focusing on student outcomes.

Overall, collaboration is most effective when it is embedded in school culture and supported by both leadership and practical experience.

I agree with the skills and conditions in the video, especially communication, empathy, shared goals, and conflict management. Collaboration clearly requires more than just grouping teachers—it needs structure and intention.

I would add two key elements: protected time within the school schedule and psychological safety, so teachers feel able to disagree and share ideas openly.

The leadership example is strong, particularly modelling collaboration through co-teaching. This makes collaboration more credible and is likely beneficial for students, as it aligns practice with what is being promoted.

For sceptical teachers, gradual involvement (like observation) seems useful. Often, seeing real student and workload benefits is what eventually shifts attitudes.
