The 20's

- Women gained the right to vote with the 19th amendment.
-The 18th amendment caused economic devastation. They thought this amendment would make things better after WW1, but instead it ruined lives. People lost jobs fast. It increased crimes as people were smuggling alcohol or illegally selling it.
- 3 major events in America: 1.) April 16, 1922; women were allowed to run for office in the state of Massachusetts. 2.) November 1, 1922; T. S. Elliot's poem The Waste Land was published in a magazine.
3.) February 6, 1922; The Five Power Naval Disarmament Treaty was signed.
-Speakeasies were places people met to drink without being caught. They were extremely secretive. These became a thing because of the prohibition of alcohol sales.
- 3 elements of Rothstein's biography that interest me: 1.) His education when he was younger, as it was very short and allowed to be. 2.) How he managed to rig the world series and not even be tried in court. 3.) How he handled dying, how he upheld 'the gangster code' and never told the police who had shot him.
- The elements of being a flapper include being adventurous, having energy and passion, and being independent enough to break society's taboos and stand up for yourself.
- Louis Brooks fits the flapper profile; she was dressed usually in dresses and stockings, her hair was cut short to the newest trends, and she stood with confidence.
- Dorothy Parker admires the confidence flappers have, and think that just because they are different than women in previous generations doesn't mean they are bad.
- Automobiles were important to social change because they offered a completely new lifestyle for people. Whether it be free time to now spend with friends, getting a job, or seeing more of the world and/or going to different cities, the automobile opened a door to new opportunities.
- Upon listening to Goodbye Dolly Gray I thought the idea of the songs meaning was cool, but the music and lyrics were too repetitive for me. Upon listening to When You were Sixteen I thought it was a very genuine song with true emotions tucked into it, however, it was too slow for me.
- The slang words I chose were giggle water, heebie-jeebies, whoopee, spiffy, and drug-store cowboy. I chose these because they all sound funny and catchy.
- From everything I have read and heard, I believe the Great Gatsby will have characters that are flappers, characters that are involved in the criminal life, lot's of slang terms, different classes of people, and automobiles somehow playing an importance to the story.

The Harlem Renaissance

The Harlem renaissance was a time period of new arts and literature, a lot of which were controversial at the time period. It was greatly influenced by the horrific history of African Americans as well as their harsh present. Some African Americans were criticized for glorifying white culture so much so they almost completely lost their own. Others were criticized for glorifying African culture to the point little to no appreciation was given to the American culture which they live around. During this time, artists tried to find an in-between. They tried to tie in the different cultures, social classes, and even old to new art and literature techniques in their everyday lives. A lot of African Americans used this time period to stand up for themselves and tell Americans they were no longer going to be treated badly. this fits into the time period of The Great Gatsby because during this time women gained the right to vote; new possibilities were emerging and a lot of old characteristics of America were changing.
Langston Hughes was an incredible poet, novelist, and playwright during this time period.
He wrote a very famous poem called 'The Negro Speaks of Rivers' which was one of the firsts to celebrate and dignify the image of Africa in American literature. He was important because he helped lead the way to African American empowerment and confidence. He spoke of topics others didn't and made connections between different cultures.

'The Great Gatsby' could refer to someone as a legend.
From the covers, it seems the book will include topics such as money and wealth, alcohol, sad times, and romance. The one that stands out to me the most is the one with a man figure falling into a hole.
From the movie trailers, it is safe to assume there is a lot of focus on romance.
'Young and Beautiful' by Lana Del Ray is a song that sounds on the happier and light side, but has sadness tucked into the lyrics. She questions what will happen down the road; will he get tired of her? Will he stop finding her attractive? It does get lighter once again as she declares 'I know you will' in the song. It could predict troubles the relationship in the book.
'Kill and Run' by Sia is a song about hurting someone and then being so ashamed of it, the person runs away from it instead of facing the person.
'A Little Party Never Killed Nobody' by Fergie brings a mood
to the table that is happy, fun, and free. This could shine light on the time period where the book takes place and also the cultural ways of life then.
