I am going for work experience at Seagrown which is near the coat/beach. it is a restaurant which serves foods and drinks and has entertainment as well on certain days such as live music etc. They also carry out tasks that involve the sea and sealife such as finding and growing different types of seaweed but also finding the different types of birds that can be found around the harbour.

They're visions and values are to create a more eco friendly environment so that they can help global warming but also to create a healthier environment for individuals to live in. for example they have different types of seasoning that can be used in foods that include seaweed in them which is healthier than most seasoning items that can be bought from stores but also they have seaweed based beverages that are also healthier for people.

My role at the place will be doing a bit of everything meaning trying out a bit of every section such as cleaning, serving making drinks etc. we first started off by researching and putting together some ideas of what we do differently at harbour, or build in order to attract more younger individuals at harbour. We spent the first two days trying to come up with ideas and trying to research into things that are relevant or some examples of what other similar places have done but also trying to find a way in which we could present that information. I also witnessed how they greet and serve their costumers on a daily basis while i was there. Furthermore, starting from the third day we started learning about the different types of seaweed and how you can tell them apart by the way they look but also feel while also learning the places in which you would be able to find them and how easy it is to find them. Next, we learned about the different types of birds that you can witness while walking around harbour. We travelled to different places near the harbour.

Their structure of business is not too complicated in the sense that they have everything they need such as labs and equipment on the ship which means that they do not have to travel anywhere else or for example to a different town/city. However, their actual job that they do is quite difficult since not only they have to deal correctly with their costumers on day to day basis and have great costumer service skills they also need to correctly carry out their other jobs such as finding the correct seaweed but also carrying out all the procedures correctly in order for the seaweed to be ready to fully grow and be examined. Furthermore, they also need to carry out boat trips to their seaweed farm and make sure that their farm is doing well and nothing is wrong with it.

They have to carry out health and risk assessments regularly in order to make sure that the boat is a safe place for all the staff but of course for all the costumers that come to the cafe or that come on the boat to learn more about seagrown's job and they do on a daily basis. After the health and risk assessments they carry out, they start by preparing the area for the costumers meaning they move any tables that need moving back to the correct place and they clean and sanitise the area in order for it to be safe and clean for the costumers.

As mentioned in the section above, i went for work experience at Seagrown which is located at harbour.
The hours that i did were 9am to 5pm which a total of 40 hours in the vip week. We did not have a very strict uniform that we needed to purchase or buy however, it was recommended that we wore something that was old or that we do not usually wear on a daily basis and the same with shoes, and that is because there was a slight chance we would get wet from all the activities we had to conduct. As mentioned above, we were expected to turn be there for 9 so that everything ran smoothly and according to the time set because there were a lot of different activities we had to conduct throughout the day some of which we needed to move to different places around the harbour.

positives and negatives

The positive side of me working a this sort of place is that i will get more experience in the customer service journey and i will improve my skills even more which can be very useful for any of my future jobs. Furthermore, i learned a lot about the different types of seaweed and the different buildings that might get guilt around the harbour area for more younger individuals to come down and enjoy the view and the activities.

I think this work experience not only taught me the importance of costumer service but it also taught me that as a community we need to be more aware of our surroundings and our environment.

Seagrown use their seaweed farm in order to create different products that are healthier for individuals, such as, food, drinks and some body/hand lotions. For example, for the food area they have different seasonings that can be used in food that are healthier than the ones that can be bought off markets. Furthermore, they also have beverages such as larger, that also contain seaweed in them which healthier than the normal ones. Lastly, they also have body lotions and hand creams that also contain seaweed extractions which makes it organic and it also makes it safer for people who have sensitive skin or that have conditions in which they cannot use any ingredients that are too harsh on their skin. Moreover, they also sell their own merch which includes clothing materials such as shirts, or hats, and these can be found on their online website alongside the seasonings, drinks, bodylotions. Day 1

On the first day we did not do a lot of activities, since it was our first time meeting Alice( the person helping us with the work experience) but we got to know each other, they told us a bit more about seagrown and the facilities they include. Next, we moved on to starting to think about the project that was set which was ' what would you change around harbour to attract more individuals'. For this to be done we had to walk around harbour and look at the empty places in which something could be built in the future in order to help attract more people including younger individuals. When we came back we had to put all the ideas we had on paper but also think how it would work out and what the benefits of it would be.

Day 2

On the second day, we continued to work on the project and make sure we knew what we wanted to present it as for example, a powerpoint, or a tik tok, or an essay. After that we had to make sure that we had all the ideas down on paper in order that made sense but also some pictures in order to explain where the new buildings would be built. From this point on we had to work on this project in our own time which meant that we would not be doing it for the next three days and we also had to make sure that it was ready for Friday which was the last day.

Day 3

On day 3 we moved on to doing different stuff and one of the things we moved on doing was to go through the process of figuring out which parts of the seaweed we found on the beach, had the mark that indicated that they can reproduce again which was called the sori. We had to carefully cut around the area that had the sori on it and make sure that we deep cleansed it and then put it on the side for the next step. Furthermore, once we finished that we then had a look on some other sori samples that were already ready, and we looked at them under a microscope hoping to catch any strange things such as bugs moving about etc.

Day 4

On this day we looked at the soris that we carefully treated the day before and then we moved them all in the space that they had outside the ship which all the soris when in the water and then they got the chance to grow faster. finally on this day we also got more time to get our project together and make sure that everything was set up for the next day in which we would have to present our ideas to some ship memebers that work there.

Day 5

On the last day, we went out on a boat ride with supervision in groups of two before the time our projects would have to be shown. Once the time came, we all sat down in our teams and we had to present our project and ideas to the crew members coming around to see them all. Lastly after we finished all of that one of the crew members ordered some pizzas for us all as a goodbye.

review and future development

In my opinion i got many skills from attending the work experience for example, since i had to get up early so that i get there on time since i lived far from it, i got to improve my time management skills to an excellent level while also i got to improve my confidence levels since we had to present our ideas from the presentation we had to do. Most of the activities we did were group activities which means we had to work in a group which further helped us develop group activity skills. All these would be very helpful to add on my CV for future jobs that i might be applying for since they will see the development from previous jobs. Apart from joining a similar organisation/business, from the skills you will get by serving people drinks and food it could guide you to be a barista or a waitress. Next, you can also be a professional boat rider since you learn how to work a boat because you have to sail out to the seaweed farm.

There was a lot of staff all around the ship, and some of them were supervisors while some others were regular staff because they were newer. Alice, the woman that taught us everything and was with us for the whole week, is the manager of this business since she has been there for a very long time and she has a very good knowledge about everything that needs to be done. Lastly, there are different individuals that have a good knowledge for different parts of the ship and the seaweed process, for example the person that chooses the correct seaweed with the ability to grow more or the person that goes and collects the different types of seaweed etc.
