Most of all the crew members and soliders aboard vessels stationed at Pearl Harbor are fast asleep. However, the few night watchmen on the USS Condor sight a unidentifiable object floating around the entrance to the port. They believe it to be a submarine periscope, but due to their sleep-deprived cognitive abilities, the weakness of the threat, and America's peaceful wartime policies they decide not to alert the authorities.

The Captain of one of the American destroyers spots inbound submarines, however, the nationality of the submarines remains a question. He radios the Fourteenth Naval District, which is in charge of the protection of Pearl Harbor. He sends the message “We have attacked, fired upon, and dropped depth charges upon submarine operating in defensive sea area." However, decoding the message was a strenuous process that morning, which is crucial to the timeline of Pearl Harbor as the Captain was waiting for orders that never came.

Upon Isoroku Yamamoto's command, the first fleet of Japanese fighter planes take off from the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Pearl Harbor Strike Force carriers. There are over 200 planes that take off, filling the skies with an idea of what is to come. The base was located around 200 miles North of Oahu, so the pilots relied on the morning darkness to remain undetected.

From an American watchtower in Oahu, Hawaii, the first wave of Japanese aircraft are spotted but are marked as unidentified aircraft. The tower sends out a radio report about the suspicious aircraft flying over the Pacific to Pearl Harbor. An Army Lieutenant who is notified of the report dismisses it, as the planes are believed to be American B-17 bombers back from a test flight in California.

Japanese aircraft fill the skies, and American soliders rush to their stations in a panic as alarms blare across the base. The first American ship to be sunk in the attack is the USS Arizona, which was hit by 6 aerial bombs. It is arguably the most famous ship that was attacked at Pearl Harbor, as it's sinking caused the death of approxiametly 1,777 soliders, who were entombed when it sunk. Today, the ship still remains in the exact location it was after the events of December 7, 1941.

An American destroyer, the USS Helm retaliates by shooting down two enemy aircraft and sinking a Japanese submarine that is located near the entrance to the port. One of the two sailors aboard the submarine drowns, while the other is taken as a prisoner. They become the first person to be taken as a prisoner of war by the U.S. in WWII. The USS Helm sustained minor injuries but returned to service in the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The ship was retired from service in 1947.

The first wave of attack was over, and it had successfully, fatally, damaged and sunk many of the American ships. The second Japanese wave of attack was ordered to begin, which focused on dive-bombing to destroy the remaining ships through the smoke and rubble of the aftermath of the first wave. In total, over 170 planes made up the second wave, and their mission was successful as they managed to sink all 8 American battleships at the port.

Days prior to the attack, the American destroyer the USS Shaw was taken out of port and placed in a dry dock for maintenance work to be done. Dry docks are areas in a port where ships can enter and the surrounding water can be drained for repair work, maintenance, etc. After the work is completed, the water is let back in and the ship is able to return to its at-ease location. On the day of the attack, 3 Japanese bombs hit the ship while it was in the dry dock, and it exploded. However, due to the lack of water, the destruction became wildly uncontrollable and the vessel was ordered to be abandoned.
