Is it a wildflower, or is it a weed?

Today we looked at wildflower ID and decided that really anything that grew where or when we didn't ask it to could be classed as a 'weed'! So, with this in mind everyone cast their eyes through the illustrations, sorted them into garden or wild plants and then jotted down notes - is this something in their garden, would they like it to be? Are there are of these that learners would like to learn more about and/or grow. We now have several sunflowers, lavender and dead nettles on our list to add into the course - great! The illustrations are also a really helpful reminder when you are out, or busy spending time in your own garden. Really well done to everyone, fabulous ideas and really enjoyable to hear just what you have growing in your garden.

A fabulous way to create some beautiful art from your garden, please use a mallet, or rolling pin instead of a metal hammer if you can. Please be aware of others around you and your personal safety during this activity.

Adding colour to your clay plaques

Today we will be adding a lovely colour wash and carefully picking out some of the detail from the impressions of flowers, leaves and herbs that you made last week. Remember to take your time mixing the acrylic paint with lots of clean water so that the wash will flow across the surface of the clay, and not obscure the details. The paint will settle into all of the indentations and straight away you will be able to see your leaf and herb designs more clearly.

Take time to go over some of these with a very fine brush and a little acrylic paint. Use your creativity with adding colour, chose those that are your favourites or that represent the plants too.

We can add hangers to the clay with braided embroidery threads which will be really colourful and strong too.

We will spray the plaques with yacht varnish to seal in all of the fabulous colour and details that you have created, and help it to stay bright and fresh for much much longer.

Collecting herbs, grasses and wildflowers for your pot pourri

Take a little wander around CARE and you will quickly find so much that can be added to your pot-pourri mix. Not only colourful flowers and leaves but herbs such as Rosemary, Lavender, oregano, fennel, mint and many more. Crush the leaves and cut the stems of the lavender into small pieces - they hold as much oil as the flower heads and will give a real burst of aromatic fragrance to your pot pourri.

Grasses, seed heads, wildflowers and fallen leaves all help to add substance to your mix. You can even add a few drops of essential oils if you really want to spice things up a little!

Your pot pourri will keep dry and fresh in your linnen bags and you can simply give it a shake, add a few more drops of sensory oil when you wish to liven it up a little.

These lovely bags make thoughtful gifts and can be refilled to celebrate the seasons at any time of year. Have fun!
