At the beginning of the story, the setting is described metaphorically. For example: "The air was soft and beautiful, the sky was darkening by slow degrees from blue to the calm and lovely violet of dusk."(424)

-The City's regular air is being compared to softness and beauty.

-These two unlike things are being compared because it makes the readers believe that 'Love' is living and contributing to a calm and beautiful environment.

-This quote reveals that they're living in a calm environment and that they're welcoming the new season, not knowing what is to come in the future.
