Critical literacy includes using texts that cause us to take a hard look at the world with our students.  Using texts that help ask hard questions and have those difficult conversations through the lens of a good book.  Critical literacy includes disrupting the commonplace (or seeing things from another angle) interrogating multiple perspectives (or being able to question the various perspectives portrayed in the text) focusing on sociopolitical issues, and taking a stand toward social justice.  I think everyone should be aware that there is always more than one point of view and learning empathy for others is powerful.  Can they read a text about a child who is not accepted and identify and be compassionate in their discussions?  I think that critical literacy is important to students in as much as it teaches them to be a compassionate, empathetic person, which is something they may not get at home. ]]> 2018-02-27 19:59:36 UTC https://padlet.com/apanning3/ccprx60syd3u/wish/236129504 rkane2 https://padlet.com/apanning3/ccprx60syd3u/wish/236149738 Robbie Kane

Teachers are able to guide students to think critically about what the author is trying to say to readers and students are able to have meaningful discussions about topics that may be heavy, but that need to be thought about and talked about with one another. Critical literacy involves students reading or listening to texts that cause them to see another's point of view. It causes students to consider what others different than them experience. It can result in students becoming more active in their communities. They examine certain events that occurred in the past through a different perspective. 
It is important for children to be able think critically and be able to consider opinions other than their own. It is also important for the students to have compassion for others.

Critical Literacy is a text that addresses serious social issues, but told in a format that is friendly for children. Telling a story is comforting, no matter the topic, so it is a great way to get children to understand the issue. Critical literacy to me is trying to get children to imagine standing in someone else's shoes, trying to see someone else's viewpoint.  Children should be able to discuss how the "see" things from the other person's viewpoint. Classes are encouraged to have discussions on race, class, and social injustices.

I think it is important because it encourages empathy and understanding of others feelings and reasons for their actions.

Critical literacy is sharing texts with students that cause them to think about the world around them. It gives them an opening to discuss critical issues and to expand their thinking on different issues. It is important for students to become aware of different ideas and ways of thinking. Critical literacy is having our students looking at a text through multiple viewpoints as it relates to social issues. Critical literacy requires students to think beyond what the text states and looking at the issues presented through a different set of eyes. Critical Literacy is using literature to teach students about the world we live in so that they can have a better understanding of others. It may be teaching them how to be more understanding of the views and opinions of others or just having empathy for their peers. It is important of our kids to know how to have different backgrounds and opinions and still be able to have honest conversations in a civil way.
