Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone was born in Bay City, Michigan, on August 16, 1958. She was the third of the six children, being the spoiled "sissy of the family" that often used her feminine wiles to get her way. Her parents, Silvio "Tonny" Ciccone and Madonna Fortin, were very religious, putting their kids in Catholic schools and prayed daily at the church's alter, which later influenced her controversial work. Another heavy influence was the loss of her mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer during her pregnancy with Madonna's youngest sister. The pain of losing her mother followed her into her adolescence, causing her to rebel against her stepmother and her traditional upbringing.

Due to her parents' strict observation of the Catholic faith, they placed their children in Catholic elementary schools, where they were constantly surrounded by nuns, priests, and the overwhelming power of the religion. Later on, even through her insubordinate adolescence, she had a drive for perfectionism and high achievement. She was a straight-A student, cheerleader and disciplined dancer who graduated from high school a semester earlier than her peers. In 1976, the University of Michigan offered her a full scholarship to their dance program. In 1977, during her undergraduate studies, Madonna was awarded a six-week scholarship to study with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York City.

After many struggles with dead-end jobs, failed relationships, and unsuccessful attempts at fame, Madonna decided to go solo and hire a manager to get her singing career on track in 1981. Camille Barbone of Gotham Records, her manager, showed Madonna how to navigate the male-dominated world of the music business, scoring her a deal with Sire Records, causing her first hit, "Everybody", to hit No.1 on the dance charts in 1982. Her following albums, Madonna in 1983, and Like a Virgin in 1985, earned her fame. Girls all over the country were imitating Madonna's distinct sense of fashion, including fishnet stockings and lace lingerie. She later starred in multiple films, including Who's That Girl (1987), Bloodhounds of Broadway (1989) and Dick Tracy (1990).
