Alcee comes onto Edna much stronger than Robert did. Arobin very clearly is infatuated by Edna: "He admired Edna extravagantly" (79). Arobin makes sure that he will be able to meet Edna again when he gets her to agree to go to another horse race with him: "but [he] did not light his cigarette until he left her, after she had expressed her willingness to go to the races with him again" (81). Alcee kisses Edna's hand in a very bold move: " And he bent and pressed his lips upon her hand as if he wished never more to withdraw them" (83). Alcee also makes many more bold statements towards Edna about how his feelings for her are very strong and how he wishes to be with her. This is completely different from Robert, who was disgusted by the idea of stealing someone's wife. Edna is enjoying every second of her flirtatious interaction with Alcee Arobin, but he sends her an apology for coming on so strongly. Arobin then follows his apology up some time later by kissing her on the lips, flirtatiously. Needless to say, Arobin has a much stronger approach to expressing his desire for Edna than Robert did.

Robert's approach to Edna was significantly more dignified than Alcee's approach as Robert recognized the line between companionship and infidelity- a line that Alcee was quick to cross. Robert created a friendship with Edna and some of the other women on the Isle while giving Edna more attention, while Alcee immediately wanted to spend time alone with Edna at the races (81). Alcee was consistently explicit with his feelings for Edna. Chopin writes, "Arobin caught the contagion of excitement which drew him to Edna like a magnet" (80), expressing Alcee's immediate interest in Edna. In comparison, Robert was significantly more reserved, to the point where he traveled a great distance to avoid the feelings he has for Edna. Edna's relationship with Robert was emotionally-driven, yet her relationship with Alcee is sexually-driven as it allows her to explore the more flirtatious side to herself especially because Alcee's is very forward and Mr. Pontellier is away. Finally, when Edna got in a dispute with Alcee, it was resolved through a sincere letter of apology and intimacy. Chopin includes the expedited progression in their relationship writing, "They became intimate and friendly by imperceptible degrees, and then by leaps. He sometimes talked in a way that astonished her at first and brought the crimson into her face; in a way that pleased her at las, appealing to the animalism that stirred impatiently within her" (84). Alcee approached Edna in a firm and bold manner, traits that Robert lacked when forming his relationship with Edna.

Although both Robert and Alcee both had strong desires to be with Edna, they were very different in what they wanted and how they got them. Alcee and Edna's relationship is much more sexual than Edna and Roberts. As written, Alcee stirs the "animalism" within her. In contrast, Robert had real feelings for Edna, ones other than just being infatuated with her. Alcee comes on much more strong and aggressive. Right after they attend the first race in a group, he asks Edna to attend another with just him. He also kisses her on the hand and lips, the cause of an apology letter written to Edna for moving too quickly. Robert is much more of a gentleman. He takes a longer time getting to know her, and they spend many hours together without him making any advances. Robert also does not want to cause infidelity in Edna's marriage, and so he removes himself from the situation. This shows that he cares about Edna's well-being and image whereas Alcee does nothing to make the readers think this.

Robert and Alcee take drastically different approaches to Edna. Robert is much slower in getting to know her and takes time and care in doing so while Alcee is quick to introduce himself to Edna and is much more aggressive in his efforts to get to know her. Robert is much more reserved and acts more like a gentleman, careful not to cross too many boundaries at once but Alcee rushes to be with Edna alone, and even kisses her hand, which is much more intimate than Robert gets with Edna early on in their relationship.

While Robert and Edna's relationship was very slow-moving and based on their interests and cognitive equality, Edna and Alcee's relationship advances quickly and is very sexually charged. Alcee is very direct and animalistic in his approach. He acts rashly, led by emotion, then later does damage control for his impulsiveness, like when he kisses Edna's hand and writes her an apology letter afterward for being too forward. Robert, on the other hand, pushes boundaries slowly and blurs the barrier between friendship and romance. He is much more reserved and respects Edna's marital status, choosing a more intelligent and emotional relationship, rather than physical.
