I think that Liam O'Flaherty wrote the story because he knew a lot about the Civil War in Ireland going on at the time. I feel like he was trying to convey a sense of sadness through his writing to help us see and feel the emotional pain that everyone else was going through at the time of the war. He did this mainly through suspense and surprise. One example is, "Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother's face." I think he used this as his last sentence so that he could give us that emotion. Since the civil war was brother against brother, friend against friend, and neighbor against neighbor. I feel like O'Flaherty was trying to show us how painful it was for most of the people to be battling against each other. He conveyed this through mental image and 360 degree view.

Why is Payton Farquar being executed
Payton Farquar is being executed because a union soldier came and told him that no one was guarding the bridge. Payton took this to his advantage and decided he was going to sabotage the bridge. Once he got there, there were people guarding the bridge. Payton got caught and was executed, the military hung him off a bridge in a formal militia matter.
What is odd or absurd in the story so far?
In the story, there are a few odd parts that don't make since. Like why they start with the hanging and don't tell us anything about the man and why he is being hung. Another thing that is weird to me is why did the union soldier set him up to get him killed. To me it seems odd that they would chose a planter of all people, a good hard working man to kill.
-The ticking of his watch is so distorted it is distracting him from his thoughts.
-While floating down the stream he can hear the humming of the gnats, the beating of dragonflies wings, and the strokes of water-spiders legs. All these sounds are things you wouldn't usually be able to hear.
-Everything to him seems to be slower including the stream and the ticking of his watch.
-While hes going down the stream he can see the trees, the leaves, the veining on the leaves, the insects on the leaves, all the colors of the leaves, and the dew drops on the grass

After having a delusion about walking all the way to his wife and seeing and hearing abnormal things, he is killed. They end the story with his neck breaking, then all goes black and he is dead.

After all the traps Rainsford has let the general into, I think that Rainsford is going to lose. The general has a lot more experience with what he is doing plus he has the upper hand due to the hounds and having Ivan to help him out. I do not think that Rainsford is ever going to get off the island.
