The usage of Repetition

According to the reading, repetition is about being creative and surprising the listeners each time it's used through the duration of the song. I agree with Ratliff because I feel that all music contains the musical element of being repetitive. It's up to the creator of the music to be able to distract the listener by repeating something similar. In, Every Song Ever, Ratliff states, “ “Aint it funky now,” he repeats, as often as he likes, sometimes as a neutral marker in between the bands repetitions, and sometimes an exclamation centring your attention.” This quote illustrates that the usage of repetitiveness can sometimes draw attention to the listener, but later on shift the attention to something similar. This justifies this musical concept because the repetition can intrigue the listener and is a very common usage in music. Overall, It really isn’t about what an artist repeats each time, it’s about how they repeat it.

I like the idea of a kind of eternal music, but I didn't want it to be eternally repetitive, either. I wanted it to be eternally changing. So I developed two ideas in that way. 'Discreet Music' was like that, and 'Music for Airports.' What you hear on the recordings is a little part of one of those processes working itself out. -Brian Eno

I know a repetitive song when I hear one, but translating that intuition into a number isn't easy. One thing we might try is looking at the number of unique words in a song, as a fraction of the total number of words. - Colin Morris
