In Praise of Dreams by Gary Soto (Poem)

This poem by Gary Soto explain dream as being an ideal escape from reality. He writes about his experience of dreaming and what goes on when he dreams. He talks about meeting Picasso, swimming with dolphins, and learning how to play the guitar. All of these things seem to be what he yearns for in his life although some may not be capable of achieving. Dreams are a place where we can go to enter an alternate universe full of our hopes and wishes. In the last line of his poem his says "someone above is giving me a second chance." Soto says the dreams are a way to experience a life that you may not live in reality, it is your second chance to fulfill all aspirations.

Jacob's Dream by Raphael (Art Piece)

This art piece by Raphael illustrates what dreams were thought to be back in the renaissance period. Back then dreams were seen as religious awakenings. In this painting Jacob dreamt of a ladder up to the heaven with angels surrounding him. Many other paintings that I came across while researching were similar in the sense that dreams were meant to embody a religious experience. The idea of dreams has changed drastically from that age whereas now dreams arent considered to be religious.

The Science of Dreaming, with Deirdre Barrett (Podcast)

Deidre Barrett is a professor of psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and she focuses on the study of dreams. In this podcast she discusses why she believes we dream. She explains REM, rapid eye movement, which is the stage most of our dream occur in. She also theorizes why we have reoccuring dreams. She says that the dreams that happen over and over again are the ones that resemble ideas that occupy our mind the most, the ones that are most important to us. Furthermore this podcast discusses how dreams allow us to problem solve and also give us inspiration. Finally one things that really stood out to me from this podcast is when she said dreams are our "wiser self speaking to us".

Sleeping to Dream by Jason Mraz (Song)

This song by Jason Mraz emphasizes the idea that dreaming is this wonderful thing that we look forward to. He paints this story of how all he wants to do is dream and how he only wants to sleep so that he can dream. Similarly to Gary Sotos poem he writes how dreaming is an escape. He includes lyrics like "i'm sleeping to dream about you, i'm so tired". This song helps me answer the broader question because it shows how dreaming is meant for us to fufill all of our longing hopes.

A New Theory for Why We Dream (Article)

This article was very interesting for me to read because it uncovered a new idea for why we dream. This article was more science based so it helped me grasp the neurological aspects to dreaming. In the article Erik Hoel announces a new theory about dreaming that has not been talked about in the world of psychology yet. His theory is based off of machine learning which is when systems can learn and adapt without following specific instructions. Hoel says that with machine learning "programs do the same task again and again, they can become “overfit”—able to do that one thing really well, but not to learn lessons and create general knowledge that can be applied to different tasks". This is what he says happens when we dream. When we dream we break the cycle of doing the same tasks we do throughout the day such as school or work. Dreaming is this disruption we need from this so called machine learning.

Pixar Red's Dream (Short Film)

This short film by Pixar tells the story of a clown (Red) who has a dream that he is in the circus as a unicyclist. The purpose of this film is to show how dreams can give us unrealistic hopes. When Red wakes up he is defeated by the fact the he is not actually in the circus. The ending is dark and gloomy to show the negative effects dreams can have. This taught me that even though dreaming gives us an escape from reality it can also leave us feeling hopeless when we wake up.
