Analyzing Children's Media by

This board is a place where I would like you to share your ideas about the group project. What are some topics you're interested in and what are some types of media (television or film, if possible) that you would like to analyze? Post it here. We can see each other's ideas here and I can organize the ideas into groups. I added two examples under my name here to help get the posts started and give you examples of what I'm looking for.

In order to do this, you'll need to double click on the background. This will create a space where you can type in your name (in the top portion of the post) and then in the box below you can add different topics of interest and/or any particular media that you are interested in analyzing. I'd like you to complete this by 8/28, so I can put you in groups and give you some time to talk about the project in break out groups in Monday's class. Thanks and I look forward to hearing about your topics!

(Here's an example). I'm interested in analyzing how gender is portrayed across educational television shows (I'm thinking about analyzing cartoons on PBS) created for an audience of children 3-5 years old.

(Another example). I'm interested in Disney films and analyzing the "heroes" of some of their most popular movies. I'm also interested in doing something with Anime. Another idea is to analyze risky behaviors engaged in by characters in Gossip Girl. I'd also like to explore themes of power in Star Wars films!

I'm also interested in how children grow up and view themselves based on Disney Princess films. How do they relate to them, how they view the female protagonist's in the films, and how do this films influence female children in certain age groups.

I am interested in analyzing Disney princesses by discussing body image through the way they are portrayed in films. I would like to discuss how each princess dresses and how some of their outfits are seemed provocative. With this in mind, I would like to discuss how it can affect young girls when it comes to dressing. I am also interested in how children relate to Disney princesses and how they view the protagonist in the films.

I am really interest in the Greys Anatomy idea that Noelle had. we both watched Grey's and seeing how Meredith's mother treated her and how she took that into her work and life is quite interesting. I would like to talk about how important parent child relationships are to have healthy relationships in the future. I also find It interesting looking at how TV shows portray those with special needs and how children treat other children with special needs. I would like to see if tv shows and movies are accepting or if they are being part of the problem.

I'm interested in how body image and the way that characters in media looked growing up fueled negative perceptions of our own bodies and potentially could have led to eating disorders. I'm thinking of analyzing shows on Disney Channel as well as Nickelodeon that were around in the late 1990s and early 2000s and to see if they have made any progress with more representation. I also would be interested in analyzing those same networks, but also to look at representation of different races and ethnicities and how that also could have impacted self-esteem

I am really interested in analyzing the Disney Princess films. Specifically for body image through how the princesses dress, and like Veronica said, on how that can effect young girls especially the more revealing princess dresses. Second, I'm also super interested in looking more into the way that almost every princess in the movies is like a rebel against authority, or goes against norms in order to be free and exert leadership, and what influence that can have on girls (and boys) today.

I am interested in analyzing how Disney princesses influence girls at such a young age. From body image to gender norms, Disney princesses put a certain persona of how girls should behave and even look. Does this affect young children negatively? That’s something that I really would love to analyze and get a deeper look into.
