  • WW1 was the first war that was fought using modern weapons such as tanks. In the wars, before WW1 wars would have been fought in lines such as the civil war was, but WW1 was fought in trenches instead.

The trenches were big, they were about 3 meters deep and 1-2 meters wide (9.8x6.5 feet). They were often dug in a zig-zag pattern also they did this so if an artillery shell landed in the trench it would not go far down the trench.

Trenches often had a lot of diseases and the risk of gas attacks every single day. There were also the mental challenges of the trench, for example, seeing your best friend dying from a gas attack or being blown up and you need to see their body every day, that was probably one of the biggest challenges of the trenches.

People have been trying to make stainless steel before but they all have failed. Brearley stainless steel was able to work because of its 12.8% chromium content.

The trench coat is able to keep the person inside worm and safe from the trenches.

When the troops 1st started to dig down into the ground that was the beginning of the stalemate. Once they dug down then they were in for the long war because they could not just politely ask them to leave they had to storm the heavily defended trench which often they would not be able to do.

The veteran soldiers who have been fighting for the past 3 years often called them Doughboys because they were eager to fight. With the freshmen on the front line, the counter-attacks and attacking the German trenches made it 
    easier.

This is the 1st war where airplanes saw major battles as they were so new. Many people became famous for winning battles in airplanes for example the Red Barron was a German pilot who had about 80 air battle wins.

We still see PTSD in soldiers coming home from war today. In WW1 there was no help for disabled/ wounded veterans and since a lot of the factory jobs were taken up by other people who could not fight the young men would often become homeless as well.
