The only reason they choose to attack Mrs. Hutchinson is because she got  the slip of paper that had a black dot in it, thus the lottery. Even if she pleaded for them to stop, they did not halt their actions and preceded with the savagery of killing her. Furthermore, children were associated with the ritual which is inhumane and hunting to do to a child. This illustrates how evil is in all of us because you can meet a person, they may be evil and at the same time you barely notice it at all this is due to that, no appearance does define evil.
