Slavery and trafficking, something that has been going on for centuries and is still a problem today. Slavery is a system that allows a person to buy and/or sell someone else. Slave trading was usually done by the Whites, and they bought and sold the "minorities," anyone who wasn't white. A major group that was used for slaves was the Africans. Africans were brought to the Americas during the period of the Atlantic slave trade. This slave trade lasted from the 15th century to the 18th century. The transportation of these slaves from africa was the middle passage. This is the part where the Africans were packed onto modified ships and taken on a three month journey to the Americas.

1. Slave Ships.

Slave ships. Slave ships were usually large cargo ships that had been converted for use as slave transport. These ships have also been called "Guineamen" due to their use on the Guinea coast in Africa. Conditions aboard these ships were awful, both for the slaves and the crew as well. Owners of ships did whatever they could to cram on as many slaves as possible, selectively grouping them to keep efficient, ships could hold up to 700 slaves, plus crew, plus cargo. Some ships would sit for days with people on them, waiting for more. The ships were dirty, the air was foul. Disease was a constant threat. The space between decks could be as little a four and-a-half feet, making is impossible for slaves to stand, so they laid. People were put very close together to fit as many as possible.

There was always resistance against the European slave traders. The slaves carefully planned their actions, using the children to communicate as as the children could still somewhat move. Conspiracy groups were kept to a minimum to keep the risk of being caught low. It is estimated that one in every ten loaded slave ships had some form of rebellion occur. The slaves would plan an attack on the crew of the ship, often killing a good amount of it. Most of the time the crew fought back, killing off more slaves. However, there have been reports of successful revolts on the ships as well as Africans actually taking control and attemting to sail back to Africa.

2. How were the slaves treated?

The Africans, although people, were not seen as people in this time. As they weren't seen as people, they weren't treated as people. Slaves had no clothes, they were chained to each other with chains that rubbed, making any movement painful. Captured Africans became victim of exploitation and dreadful punishments. When on the ships, men were chained to each other and the ship floor. Women and children were, for the most part, unchained, but still had to endure harmful conditions and tight spaces. Slaves did receive two meals a day on the ships. Those who refused to eat were force fed. And when conditions were nice, some were even let out onto the upper deck.

The middle passage was the 2nd part of a ships journey. The first being from Europe down to Africa, and the last being from the Americas back to Europe. The middle passage was huge part of the slave trade, the ships being the only means of transportation. Back then, the African people weren't seen as real people so this was accepted. However, in 1806, the African slave trade was outlawed by the United States and the United Kingdom. Although outlawed, it still occurred. Between 1807 and 1860, the British will have captured over 1 600 slave vessels and freed 160 000 slaves.
